Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison McLemore.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I want to start by introducing myself. My name is Madison McLemore, and I am the owner and photographer behind Madison Raine Photography.
I officially launched Madison Raine Photography in 2022 as a creative outlet and a way to “fill my cup” outside of my career as a special education teacher. While photography became a business a few years ago, my love for it began much earlier. Ever since I was a little girl, I was drawn to capturing the beauty around me. Whether it was flowers, nature, or landscapes during family vacations, I was always the one stopping to take photos and capture moments that others might have passed by.
Years later, my passion for photography took on a new direction when my very close friends asked me to photograph their engagement session. I was honored, excited, and honestly a little nervous. Up until that point, I had never photographed people during such an important milestone in their lives. The trust they placed in me meant everything. That session turned out to be a beautiful experience, and seeing their genuine connection through my lens sparked something in me. I realized photography wasn’t just about taking pictures—it was about preserving memories, emotions, and stories that people would treasure for years to come.
From that moment on, I knew I wanted to continue documenting life’s most meaningful milestones & moments. Since starting my business, I have had the privilege of photographing engagements, weddings, growing families, newborns, graduates, and countless moments in between. I also love when families choose to include their pets in their sessions. Our pets are often some of our most loyal companions, and they are just as much a part of the family story as anyone else. Whether it’s a dog joining a family session, a couple bringing their beloved pet to an engagement session, or simply capturing the unique bond between an owner and their furry friend, those photographs often become some of the most cherished images from a gallery.
One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been watching families return year after year, allowing me to document new chapters in their lives and build lasting relationships along the way. There is something incredibly special about photographing a newly engaged couple, then their wedding, and later seeing them return with children—or even with a new four-legged family member—to capture the next stage of their story.
As a special education teacher for more than a decade, I have seen firsthand how quickly time passes. Education is a constantly evolving field, and while I deeply value my work in the classroom, photography has provided a creative balance that allows me to connect with people in a different way. Both careers are rooted in relationships, patience, and celebrating growth, which is something I carry into every session.
Being both a teacher and a photographer has also shaped how I approach my clients. I understand that not everyone feels comfortable in front of a camera, and I strive to create an experience that feels relaxed, welcoming, and genuine. Whether I am working with energetic toddlers, camera-shy teenagers, excited newly engaged couples, or multi-generational families, my goal is to make each person feel seen, valued, and comfortable enough to be themselves.
Today, Madison Raine Photography is built on the belief that every family, couple, and individual has a story worth preserving. My goal is to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience while capturing authentic moments that reflect who people truly are. There is something incredibly special about knowing that the images I create today may become treasured family heirlooms tomorrow. Being trusted to document life’s biggest milestones and everyday moments is a responsibility I never take for granted, and it continues to inspire me every time I pick up my camera.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road, but I think that is true for most small business owners. Starting a photography business while working full-time as a special education teacher came with its own set of challenges. Like many entrepreneurs, I quickly realized that running a business involves much more than simply doing what you love. Photography is only one part of the job. There is also marketing, bookkeeping, website management, client communication, social media, editing, continuing education, and everything else that happens behind the scenes.
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing my time and energy between two careers that I care deeply about. Teaching requires a great deal of dedication, and photography often means evenings, weekends, and countless hours spent editing after a session. Over time, I have learned the importance of setting boundaries, staying organized, and giving myself grace when things don’t go perfectly.
Another challenge has been learning to believe in myself and my work. Like many creatives, I have experienced moments of self-doubt and comparison. It can be easy to look at someone else’s journey and feel like you should be further along. However, I’ve learned that growth takes time and that every photographer has their own path. Some of my greatest lessons have come from stepping outside my comfort zone, trying new things, and embracing opportunities even when they felt intimidating.
Building a client base from the ground up also takes patience. There are seasons when inquiries are plentiful and seasons when things are quieter. Learning how to navigate those ups and downs while continuing to invest in my business, improve my skills, and stay consistent has been an important part of the journey.
Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges because they have helped me grow both personally and professionally. Every obstacle has taught me something valuable, strengthened my confidence, and reinforced why I started Madison Raine Photography in the first place. The journey has not always been easy, but it has absolutely been worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Madison Raine Photography, I specialize in capturing life’s most meaningful moments for couples, families, graduates, and individuals. Whether it’s an engagement, wedding, family session, milestone celebration, or simply documenting a season of life, my goal is always the same: to create authentic photos that tell a story and preserve memories that will be cherished for years to come.
What I enjoy most about photography is that no two sessions are ever the same. Every family, couple, and individual brings their own unique personality, relationships, and story. My role is to create an environment where people feel comfortable enough to be themselves, allowing me to capture genuine connections and emotions rather than forced poses.
I believe one of the things that sets me apart is my background as a special education teacher. Having worked with children for more than a decade, I have learned the importance of patience, flexibility, creativity, and meeting people where they are. Those skills naturally carry over into my photography sessions. I am comfortable working with children of all ages and understand that sometimes the best photos happen when kids are allowed to play, explore, laugh, and simply be themselves. I’m not afraid to be silly, make funny noises, tell jokes, or do whatever it takes to create genuine smiles and authentic moments.
That same approach extends beyond children. Many adults tell me they feel nervous or awkward in front of a camera, and I take pride in helping clients feel relaxed and confident throughout their session. My goal is to make the experience enjoyable rather than stressful so that the images reflect who they truly are.
What I am most proud of is building Madison Raine Photography from the ground up while also maintaining a full-time career in education. Starting a business taught me that photography is about so much more than owning a camera and pressing a shutter button. Along the way, I have learned the business side of entrepreneurship, strengthened my communication skills, and grown tremendously as both a photographer and business owner. Every challenge has pushed me to improve and better serve my clients.
At its core, photography is about preserving moments before time moves forward and life changes. Children grow, families expand, couples begin new chapters, and loved ones age. Photographs allow us to hold onto those moments long after they have passed. Knowing that the images I create may become treasured memories for families years from now is one of the greatest privileges of my work, and it is what continues to inspire me every day.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
If I had to choose one quality that has contributed most to my success, I would say authenticity.
As a photographer, I am constantly learning, growing, and refining my craft. While technical skills are important, I believe the ability to genuinely connect with people is what makes the biggest difference. I strive to be myself during every session and encourage my clients to do the same. I don’t believe that people need to be perfect in order to create beautiful photographs. In fact, some of the most meaningful images come from the moments that are completely unplanned.
I want my clients to feel comfortable enough to let their guard down, laugh freely, be a little silly, and simply enjoy being together. Whether it’s a child bursting into laughter, a couple sharing a quiet glance, or a family embracing in the middle of a chaotic moment, those authentic interactions are often the images people treasure the most.
I also think authenticity builds trust. When clients know they can show up exactly as they are, it creates a more relaxed and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. My goal has never been to create a picture-perfect version of someone’s life. Instead, I want to capture the real connections, personalities, and emotions that make each family and relationship unique.
At the end of the day, people may forget the poses we did or the prompts I gave, but they will remember how they felt during the experience. If I can create an environment where people feel comfortable, valued, and free to be themselves, then I know I’ve done my job well. Those genuine moments are what make photography so powerful, and they are what continue to inspire my work.
