Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Ogule.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
M&D Catering really started with our family.
My wife, Jennifer, and I started M&D Catering for our two boys, Mason and Dylan—which is where the name M&D comes from. We wanted to build something of our own that we could be proud of, but more importantly, something successful that we could one day pass down to our boys. Our goal has always been to create a business that gives them opportunities and financial stability in the future, whether they choose to carry on the business themselves or build something of their own.
Jennifer and I each bring more than 20 years of experience to the business, but in two different areas that work extremely well together. Jennifer brings her background in event planning and creating memorable experiences, while I bring my culinary background along with years of business and management experience.
That combination is really what makes M&D Catering who we are. We don’t just show up with food—we look at the entire experience. From the planning and presentation to the service and, most importantly, the food, we want our customers to feel the difference.
Our food is scratch-made, and we take a lot of pride in creating menus that stand out instead of simply doing what every other caterer is doing. Whether we’re catering a wedding, corporate event, private party, or serving out of the food truck, we want people to remember both the food and the experience.
At the end of the day, M&D Catering is more than a business for us. It’s our family’s legacy. We’re building something today that we hope Mason and Dylan can be proud of tomorrow.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a new business is never easy, and like most small businesses, we’ve definitely faced our share of challenges along the way. One of our biggest challenges early on was navigating the slower weeks when orders were limited and finding ways to create more consistent business throughout the year.
Instead of letting that slow us down, we looked at it as an opportunity to grow and diversify. This past spring, we partnered with a local brewery and began handling all of the food operations for their food truck. That opened up an entirely new side of the business for us and gave us another way to get our food and our name in front of more people.
Then, in mid-September, we officially launched the corporate catering side of M&D Catering, which is something we’re extremely excited about. Our goal is to build long-term relationships with local businesses and create more consistent, year-round catering opportunities.
We’re really proud of how far M&D has come, but we also feel like we’re just getting started. We’re excited to see the growth through the remainder of this year and, even more importantly, to continue building the business and watching it flourish as we head into 2027.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At M&D Catering, we really pride ourselves on being more than just a catering company. We specialize in creating the entire experience, from the food and menu planning to helping our clients bring their event to life.
We cater everything from weddings and private parties to corporate events, festivals, and food truck events. One of the things we’re known for is our scratch-made food and our ability to customize what we do around the customer. We don’t believe every event should come from the same standard catering menu. We want to understand what our clients are looking for, what their budget is, and what will make their event memorable, and then build around that.
Jennifer and I also bring two different backgrounds to M&D that really complement each other. I come from a culinary and business management background, while Jennifer has more than 20 years of experience in event planning. That allows us to look at an event from both sides—the food and the overall guest experience.
Food-wise, we like taking familiar foods and putting our own M&D spin on them. Everything from our hand-rolled egg rolls and M&D Smash Burgers to smoked meats, short ribs, risotto, and some of our more upscale wedding and corporate menus. We want our food to stand out, but we also want it to be approachable and something people genuinely enjoy eating.
What sets us apart the most is how personal we make it. We’re still a family-owned business, so when someone hires M&D, they’re working directly with us. Our name is attached to every event, and we take that personally. Whether we’re serving 30 people or several hundred, we want the client to feel like their event matters to us.
What I’m most proud of, though, is what the business represents. Jennifer and I started M&D for our sons, Mason and Dylan—that’s where the name comes from. We’re building something from the ground up that we hope becomes a legacy for our family. Watching it grow from an idea into weddings, corporate catering, private events, and a food truck operation has been incredibly rewarding.
We’re proud of where we are today, but we’re even more excited about where we’re going. Our goal isn’t to become the biggest catering company—we want to continue growing while never losing the quality, creativity, and personal touch that made M&D successful in the first place.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think we’ve been incredibly fortunate just to have the opportunity to start M&D Catering and turn something we were passionate about into a real business.
A huge part of that has been the support we’ve received from both my family and Jennifer’s family. They’ve been by our side every step of the way—whether that meant helping at an event, supporting an idea, or simply being there during the stressful days that come with building a business. Having that kind of support system is something we never take for granted.
As far as bad luck goes, I try not to look at challenges that way. Every business is going to have slow weeks, events that don’t go exactly as planned, unexpected expenses, and moments where you question what you’re doing. Instead of seeing those moments as bad luck, we try to look at them as opportunities to learn.
Some of the biggest challenges we’ve faced have forced us to make changes, become more creative, and ultimately become better business owners. I think that’s a big part of entrepreneurship—you can’t control everything that happens, but you can control how you respond to it.
So, if anything, I’d say we’ve been lucky to have an amazing family supporting us and fortunate enough to learn from the challenges we’ve faced. Both have helped shape M&D into the business it is today.
