Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Dailey.
Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My crafting journey started in a way I never expected. In September 2024, Lyme disease completely changed my life and left me hospitalized for two months. I lost the ability to walk and had very limited fine motor control in my hands. While my medical team focused on helping me walk again, I took it upon myself to rebuild strength and dexterity in my fingers by teaching myself how to finger knit. What began as physical therapy quickly became something more: healing, creativity, and a renewed sense of purpose.
From there, I launched Heather’s Handmades Custom Knit Designs and discovered a passion for creating chunky knit blankets and cozy pieces. As I began making pet beds for my own animals, I felt inspired to do more. That led me to create Sophia’s Beds of Hope, a nonprofit named after my dog, Sophia, dedicated to donating handmade chunky knit pet beds to local animal shelters so every animal has a safe, soft place to rest.
As my creativity evolved, so did my business. I rebranded to Heather’s Handmades Custom Designs to better reflect a cohesive collection of handcrafted pieces that all center around comfort, warmth, and personalization. This includes chunky knit items, Signature Sip jars, drinkware, coasters, scorched cutting boards, resin bowls, and more. Every piece I make represents how far I’ve come and allows me to turn a difficult chapter into something meaningful, comforting, and beautiful.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges along the way has been learning the ins and outs of vendor events. In the beginning, there was a learning curve in figuring out which events were the right fit, but over time I have been able to focus on larger, well-established markets and festivals where my work truly stands out. I have also become more strategic in selecting events by considering the audience, location, and overall vibe to ensure the best possible fit for my brand and products.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create cozy, handcrafted pieces that are both beautiful and practical. My work includes chunky knit items like blankets and other soft home pieces, scorched cutting boards and coasters, epoxy decorative mason jar lid coasters, and my Signature Sips decorative mason jar drinkware. I am also continuing to explore epoxy work, which allows me to expand my designs while staying true to my overall style.
What I am most known for is creating pieces that feel warm, personal, and comforting. I focus on designing items that bring a cozy touch to everyday life, whether it is something for your home, your table, or a meaningful gift. My style centers on blending charm, function, and heart in every piece.
What sets me apart is that everything I create begins with a thoughtful, handmade approach. I do not just want to make beautiful items, I want them to feel meaningful and special to the people who use them. I am most proud of how my creativity has grown from a healing outlet into a cohesive brand that reflects comfort, purpose, and personal connection.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I do not rely heavily on apps, books, or podcasts to help me do my best in life or in my work. What grounds me most is quiet, uninterrupted time with my sidekick, Sophia, the namesake of Sophia’s Beds of Hope. Her calm presence gives me the peace, clarity, and creativity I need in both my life and my work. While I occasionally browse online for ideas or inspiration, those tools simply support the deeper sense of focus and balance.
