Today we’d like to introduce you to Genelle Sedon.
Hi Genelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
C&G Tutoring started in May 2018 with a simple idea: take the knowledge and experience my husband, Chris, and I had as educators and use it to help more students and families in our community.
For years, I had dreamed about owning my own business, but I always assumed I needed a brick-and-mortar location and a lot of startup money to make it happen. Eventually, I realized I could start with what I already had—my experience, my passion for education, and a willingness to figure the rest out along the way. So, with a Facebook page, a Google Voice number, three tutors, and a lot of faith, C&G Tutoring was born. We began meeting students in libraries and other community spaces rather than waiting until we could afford a physical location.
What started small grew through word of mouth and the support of our community. We added more tutors, expanded the subjects and grade levels we serve, and eventually began offering virtual tutoring as well. When the pandemic forced us to move online, we adapted quickly, and that opened the door to serving students well beyond our immediate area. Today, C&G provides personalized tutoring for students from pre-K through college, including SAT preparation, with both in-person and virtual options.
For me, though, the growth has never just been about building a business. Education has always been the heart of what I do. I’m a teacher, and I’ve seen firsthand how much a student can change when someone takes the time to figure out how they learn best, builds their confidence, and reminds them what they are capable of.
I’m incredibly proud of how far C&G Tutoring has come, but I’m even more proud of the students, families, and educators who have trusted us along the way. What began as a small idea has grown into something that has become a meaningful part of our community—and I’m excited to keep growing it while staying true to why we started in the first place: helping students believe in themselves and ignite their potential.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I started C&G while working as an educator and raising a family, so there were plenty of long days and moments when I wondered how I was going to make everything work.
I also had to learn how to run a business while doing it. I knew education, but I had to figure out marketing, scheduling, hiring, managing a team, and how to grow while still keeping C&G personal. I’ve had to be creative and resourceful for almost every step.
COVID was another major turning point. We had to completely rethink how we delivered tutoring and move online almost overnight. What felt like a huge challenge at the time ultimately taught me to embrace change and look for opportunities in difficult situations.
There have definitely been setbacks, but I think they’ve made me a better business owner. I’ve learned that you don’t have to have everything figured out—you just have to be willing to adapt, get creative, and keep moving forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work has always centered around education, but my path has taken me far beyond a traditional classroom. I began my career as a journalist before earning my master’s degree in education, and I’ve spent more than two decades working with students at the middle school, high school, and college levels.
In 2018, C&G Tutoring launched. Today it’s grown from a small idea into a business serving students throughout our region and virtually beyond it. What I’m most proud of, though, is the impact I’ve been able to make beyond the classroom. I’m passionate about mentoring students, advocating for English learners and diverse families, supporting first-generation students, and creating opportunities for kids who may not always see themselves represented in education.
I’ve been fortunate to be recognized as a Young Professionals Educator of the Year, one of the NEPA Top 25 Women in Business, and a WBRE/WYOU 2024 Most Remarkable Woman which allowed me to travel to Los Angeles. I’m also proud to serve on the Greater Wyoming Valley Chamber of Commerce and Catholic Youth Center board of directors.
What sets me apart is probably that I’ve never really stayed in one box. I’ve been a journalist, teacher, adjunct professor, entrepreneur, mentor, advocate, and community volunteer. I’m always looking for creative ways to connect people, solve problems, and make education feel more accessible and meaningful. At the end of the day, I want the students and people I encounter to walk away believing they are capable of more than they thought they were.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Faith is probably the biggest resource in my life. I’m Catholic, attend Mass every week, and pray the Rosary every day. My faith keeps me grounded, gives me perspective, and reminds me to lead with gratitude, purpose, and service.
I also look to the people around me for inspiration. I was fortunate to have some amazing principals, including Mr. Galella, Mr. Elias, and Mr. Correll, who believed in me, encouraged me, and helped me grow as an educator and leader. I’m also inspired by the women in my community who support and lift each other up.
And I’m incredibly blessed to have a mother who has always believed in me, a husband who supports me in anything and everything I do, and wonderful family and friends who are always in my corner. I’ve learned that some of the greatest resources in life aren’t found in an app or a book—they’re the people who believe in you, challenge you, pray for you, and remind you to keep going.
