Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriella Wilson.
Hi Gabriella, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
While studying Fine Arts in a pre-university program in Montreal, I began tattooing from home with the help of a tattooist friend that I had met years before. At 21 years of age I began travelling through Europe with a backpack, and my tattooing equipment, which went on for 3 years. I spent the next 4 years spending summers guest spotting mostly in Germany, England, NYC and Montreal and winters participating in conventions and travelling in Asia mostly in Thailand, Taiwan, Nepal, and India. I settled in Canada in 2020 and began my move to the USA in 2023. I am now settled in Pittsburgh and enjoy guest spotting regularly in NYC.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has gone through phases of being smooth and phases of being a rollercoaster. Any times of turmoil, be it a family emergency, or global catastrophe, can impact the work flow. Any stressful situation can make it a challenge to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle and balance that with creating the best environment for clients and the highest quality work. I prefer to avoid distractions that can negatively impact the quality of work I can provide for my clients. In any situation I do my best to just push straight through and that seems to keep me on the right road.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Before I began tattooing what interested me in the art was smooth black and grey work. I enjoy blending styles together and being available to different subject matter. I’m always growing and adapting and enjoy creating realism, Neo-japanese, geometric, ornamental and freehand black and grey. My style excels in large scale projects, such as sleeves or back pieces, when I’m able to gather a few simple ideas from a client and can compose a concept with flow. I like to think what sets me apart from others is the experience I give to my clients and through the care I put into my projects.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a child and teenager I was more of a tomboy. I was often shy, interested in art and played many musical instruments such as the piano, violin, trumpet and drums. However, I lost interest in them. I also played sports such as soccer, and rugby. During winter months in primary school I spent lunch hour drawing in the art teacher’s office instead of playing in the snow with my friends. I didn’t like wearing snow suits.
