Today we’d like to introduce you to BARRY THEAL, KYCH.
Hi BARRY, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey in the automotive surface and paint correction industry began with a relentless passion for perfection and a deep respect for the craftsmanship behind automotive finishes. Very early on, I realized that what most people called “detailing” barely scratched the surface of what was truly possible. To me, restoring and perfecting paint was a discipline, one that demanded knowledge, patience, and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
In the early years, one of the biggest challenges I faced was changing the perception of the profession itself. Many people viewed detailing as simple cleaning, but I saw it as a specialized craft rooted in chemistry, material science, and technical skill. That meant I had to not only perfect my own processes but also help educate clients and professionals about what true paint correction and surface protection really involved.
I dedicated years to studying paint systems, testing products, refining correction techniques, and understanding how different materials react under real-world conditions. Every vehicle presented a new challenge, and every challenge pushed me to raise my standards even higher. Rather than taking shortcuts, I focused on building processes that produced consistent, world-class results.
Another major challenge was staying ahead in an industry that constantly evolves. Automotive coatings, clear coats, tools, and technologies are always advancing. Instead of resisting change, I embraced it, continuously learning, experimenting, and pushing the boundaries of what professional surface correction could achieve.
Over time, that commitment to excellence, education, and innovation helped shape my reputation in the industry. Today, my mission remains the same: to elevate the standards of professional detailing, share knowledge with the next generation of technicians, and demonstrate that paint correction and surface protection are not just services—they are a craft built on discipline, science, and passion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a business is never easy. While much of my journey has been a relatively smooth road, the most difficult hurdle I faced wasn’t the industry, the competition, or the work itself, it was myself.
Early on, I believed that being a great technician would naturally make me a great business owner. I had spent years mastering my craft, understanding paint systems, perfecting correction techniques, and delivering exceptional results. But running a business requires an entirely different set of skills. That realization was one of the most important turning points in my career.
My biggest struggle was learning to set aside my own ego and accept that I had a lot to learn outside of the technical side of the industry. Being a business owner meant developing leadership, understanding operations, building systems, and thinking long-term rather than just focusing on the work in front of me.
Once I embraced that mindset and committed to learning how to truly run a business, not just perform the craft, the entire trajectory of my company began to change. It pushed me to grow not only as a professional but as a leader. That lesson ultimately became one of the most valuable parts of my journey.
Honestly, what I’m most proud of isn’t just the products or the brands, it’s the people. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to mentor, train, and work alongside thousands of detailers who have gone on to build successful businesses of their own.
Watching someone come into the industry unsure of themselves and then seeing them develop confidence, skill, and professionalism is incredibly rewarding. If I’ve played even a small role in helping move the industry forward and helping professionals improve their craft, that’s something I’m very proud of.
Of course building SB3 Coatings and Barjack Tools is a huge highlight. Seeing it grow into an international brand is also something I’m proud of, but even that comes back to the people and the community that helped build it.
I think what sets me apart is the amount of time I’ve spent in the trenches actually doing the work and studying the craft. Everything I’ve built has come from real-world experience, working on vehicles, experimenting with processes, and refining systems over many years.
I’ve always approached detailing from both a technical and educational perspective. I want to understand not just how something works, but why it works. That mindset has allowed me to develop processes and products that are practical for professionals in the field.
I also genuinely care about the growth of the industry. Whether it’s through training, product development, or mentoring other detailers, my focus has always been on helping professionals raise the standard of what we do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At my core, I’m a professional detailer and educator. I’ve spent over three decades in the automotive appearance industry focusing on paint correction, surface refinement, and advanced protective coatings. My specialty has always been understanding paint systems and developing repeatable methods that allow professionals to consistently achieve high-level results.
Over the years I’ve become known for training, product development, and helping elevate the professional standards within the detailing industry. I’ve worked closely with detailers all over the world, teaching techniques, building systems, and helping people turn what might start as a passion into a sustainable professional business.
I’m also the founder of Barjack Tools and SB3 Coatings, where we focus on developing advanced ceramic coating technologies and providing professional installers with the support, education, and tools they need to succeed. A big part of what I do today is still centered around innovation, education, and helping professionals grow.
