Hi Will, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My professional background is in chemistry, having graduated with my degree in 2018 and immediately entering laboratory research. However, when the pandemic disrupted the global economy in 2020, I unexpectedly lost my position. At the time, my wife was working full-time as a nail technician, and like so many others, we found ourselves navigating an incredibly challenging economic landscape. Yet, rather than letting that uncertainty deter us, it became the catalyst for a major turning point. We realized we wanted more autonomy over our future. Driven by the desire to control our own time and, most importantly, to prioritize our three children, we made the bold decision to pivot and build our own business from the ground up.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to opening our doors was far from smooth. Venturing into an entirely new industry required a massive learning curve. We spent months conducting market research, analyzing consumer demand, studying competitors’ mistakes, and trying to stay ahead of the latest service, color, and design trends defining modern salons.
Beyond the research, financing the project was a complex puzzle. To give ourselves a secure financial cushion against unexpected costs, we layered our personal savings with a bank loan and generous support from my parents. That buffer turned out to be vital because we soon hit a major roadblock: the permitting process. Navigating local government during the pandemic slowdown became a nightmare; it took an entire year just to obtain our building permits and certificate of occupancy. This meant we were paying commercial rent for a full year without generating a single dollar in revenue. There were moments during that period when the weight felt too heavy and I wanted to give up. However, my wife was my rock. Her constant encouragement kept us focused on the end goal, and I am incredibly grateful we pushed through together.
When we finally opened our doors, the excitement was mixed with a lot of nerves. We found ourselves constantly wondering: Will the customers actually come? Can we truly satisfy every client who walks through the door? In the beginning, it was a lean operation with just three workers giving it everything they had. But as we poured our hearts into our service, something incredible happened. Our clients didn’t just love their experience; they kept coming back, and they started spreading the word.
Because of that organic word-of-mouth, our team grew from three to five, then seven, and today we are a proud team of nine. The success we enjoy today is entirely built on the incredible support and loyalty of our community. We are deeply grateful to our clients for embracing us and helping us turn our dream into a thriving reality.
