Today we’d like to introduce you to Vinyal Crookz.
Hi Vinyal, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story starts in Detroit, MI. Known as the Motor City, birth place of Motown, and a hub for some of the greatest musicians in the world. From Gospel, to Soul/R&B, and Hip Hop/Rap Detroit is known for pushing boundaries. As a young kid I knew Music was my niche. At 2, I knew I found my love. Playing drums was the first vehicle to get me into music production and song writing. By 18 it all made sense and I’ve been pursing it ever since. I’m 33 now and my love for God and Music got me here to Pennsylvania as a Music Director, Music Producer and Music Instructor.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing is just easy or just hard. Everything is life has to be balanced and learning to manage the emotions surrounding every aspect is what keeps me going. It’s about never getting to high on the highs and never getting too low on the lows. The growing pains of learning production software, sequencing, song arrangement, and many other technical aspects of recording all have their difficulties but working through them. and finding breakthrough is what keeps me going. Executive producing an artist from Detroit, Jodye Watts, first album “Reacquainted Fully( Ri.F)” set it release in October 2026 brought everything full circle for me. The experience challenged everything I thought I knew about the writing and recording process. An Artist like him knows what he wants and won’t except the bare minimum. I came out of that a better producer, songwriter, recording engineer, and arranger. Now I’m challenging myself to learn new gear so his next album I can push the envelope further.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to tell people I’m a musician first, with me it’s about the details. I’ve had the privilege of being the best and being around some of the best and it reflects in my music. Many know me first for being a drummer, then after many know me for production but the worlds go hand in hand. I’ve recorded drums with Emmy Award winning Producer Nolan Mersier-Bey and I’ve been and recording engineer for Grammy Nominated Songwriter DeJaughn ‘Billy’ Murphy, both of which have influenced my need to be a stickler about the details. Where are the dynamics? Why did you sing it this way? What make this sound the one you chose? What can we remove form the song and it gets better? All of these questions give way to a deeper connection the the music. My ability to recognize the minor details separate me from many different producers nowadays. I don’t care about quantity, I care about quality. If i had to choose 50 beats that all sound like copycats or other people, generic and redundant or 10 beats that all have a wide range in approach and help convey a specific feeling, I’m picking the 10 every time. That’s why in my personal opinion I reverence Kendrick Lamar as an Artist over Drake. they don’t care for the same.
How do you define success?
Success is the measuring of ones personal goals. If I set a goal to go to the gym 5 out of 7 days for 4 weeks straight, after not going at all for 5 years, even If I had to work through getting up to 5 and only hit 3 days the first two weeks, and 4 days the next 2 weeks that within it self is success. It means you were willing to sacrifice what was familiar to you for the great good. Which compounds into providing yourself proof that you can do a certain thing which in return build ones trust in his own abilities. I can look at myself like a failure but if I compare it to the last 5 years to those 4 weeks I’d be using my perspective in a self harming way if I don’t check myself. after going through those 4 weeks I’ve now equipped myself with everything I need to start over and find consistency I wasn’t able to use before.
