Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Shultz.
Hi Garrett, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I found my love for tattooing through the process of being tattooed myself. I was gifted a tattoo appointment for my 18th birthday and after one I couldn’t stop going back. I think I was in a darker point in my life and I found tattoos as a way to hide myself by just covering the surface of my skin. I found myself in a road block and pretty lost at what I wanted to do in life. I was working a warehouse type job and hated waking up to do the same thing everyday. Something struck me one day and I decided I was going to invest in some tattoo equipment and learn myself. I got some fake skin and all the materials I needed. I got to work and would practice multiple nights a week after I got off work. I could see progress in what I was doing, but eventually I had hit a wall. I talked to my artist about doing an apprenticeship under him and wanting to put everything I had into this. He took me in and things just took off. I was learning so much everyday and seeing progress weekly. I’m very happy with the direction I am headed and couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity. I truly feel valued and honored to be apart of what I consider the best tattoo shop around.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I faced many struggles along the way. I was always scared of if I would make it or not. Would I stay busy? Would I make progress and see that success as an artist? I faced many mental struggles. Wondering if I was good enough and wondering if people liked what I was putting out. I think it’s always an ongoing battle, but you learn to accept yourself and just focus on being 1% better everyday. I think mental health is super important and should be talked about more. I’m thankful I had those outlets to go to and express how I was feeling and receive the advice I needed to hear from my mentor.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in a handful of different styles. I love doing American traditional and Pokemon tattoos. I’ve loved Pokemon ever since I was a kid and the beautiful art styles those artists create on Pokemon cards. I also find myself doing a lot of fine line and gothic/horror style tattoos. I’m a big horror movie fan so anything spooky definitely peaks my interest. I think my attitude and overall process sets me apart from others. Making clients feel comfortable and heard is a top priority for me. I want everyone in my chair to have an enjoyable experience as well as leave with a tattoo they love. Keeping clients in the loop with everything I’m doing and always striving to go the extra mile for them.
What’s next?
My plans for the future are to keep doing what I do best. I only plan to keep going and going in my journey. I look forward to the future and taking on new exciting projects. I can’t wait to look back one day and really just see how far I’ve come.
