Today we’d like to introduce you to Eunice E. Curry.
Hi Eunice E. , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My path into counseling really began with a broader interest in human services. Early on, I was drawn to work in early childhood development and roles that supported growth and development. While I was an undergraduate, a director from a local rape crisis center came to speak to one of my classes about volunteer opportunities. That presentation had a significant impact on me. I began volunteering with the organization, working on the crisis hotline and supporting survivors at hospitals during forensic examinations and through the early stages of navigating the criminal justice process. Over time, the directors began receiving positive feedback about my work from survivors and their families, and I was invited to join the center as a counselor during my final year of undergraduate study. That experience solidified my commitment to working in the counseling field.
In 2003, I began working in residential programs with adjudicated delinquent youth. Those early roles exposed me to complex trauma and behavioral health needs among young people involved in the juvenile justice system. I worked in several residential treatment environments, including programs serving youth with significant behavioral and mental health challenges as well as a residential treatment program for juvenile sex offenders. In 2007, I transitioned into a leadership role as a program manager for a residential program, where I remained for many years overseeing services and supporting both youth and staff.
While I was committed to that work, there came a point when I realized I wanted to create something of my own. After being passed over for a promotion, I took that moment as an opportunity to pivot rather than remain stagnant. In 2017, I started my practice, Perspective Counseling for Behavioral Health, while continuing to work in my leadership role. Over time, the practice grew as I continued to develop my clinical work and vision for providing trauma-informed care.
In 2022, I made the decision to transition fully into my private practice. Today my work focuses on helping individuals navigate anxiety, grief, trauma, and life transitions through a trauma-informed lens. My practice is based in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and primarily provides telehealth services across Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Delaware. Looking back, my journey has really been defined by a long-term commitment to this field and the willingness to pivot when it became clear that I needed to build something that aligned with my values and the type of care I wanted to provide.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like many people working in behavioral health, my journey has included moments where I had to navigate lack of support, bias, and professional challenges within the systems I was working in. One of the most pivotal moments came when I was passed over for a promotion, despite having the experience and qualifications for the role. At the time, it was difficult not to take that personally, especially knowing how much dedication and passion I had invested in my work over the years.
Ultimately, that experience became a turning point for me. I realized that while I couldn’t control how others viewed my value or contributions, I could control how I responded. Instead of allowing that moment to discourage me, I chose to focus on what was within my power. That decision led me to establish my own behavioral health practice.
Building a practice while continuing to work in demanding roles was not easy, but it allowed me to create a space aligned with my values and the type of care I believe people deserve. Looking back, those challenges helped clarify my direction and ultimately pushed me to take the step toward entrepreneurship and building something meaningful
As you know, we’re big fans of Perspective Counseling for Behavioral Health, LLC . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My practice, Perspective Counseling for Behavioral Health, focuses on providing trauma-informed counseling services for adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, grief, trauma, and life transitions. After more than two decades working in behavioral health across residential treatment programs, juvenile justice settings, and leadership roles, I developed a deep appreciation for the complexity of people’s experiences and the importance of creating space for individuals to explore their stories in a meaningful way.
The name ‘Perspective Counseling’ was intentionally chosen because my approach centers on helping clients develop greater self-awareness by examining their own perspective. Often people come into therapy feeling overwhelmed by something that has happened in their lives. My role is to create a space where we can slow down, explore what occurred, and better understand how their thoughts, emotions, and experiences are shaping the way they respond to situations. That process of gaining perspective often becomes the foundation for real change.
What sets my practice apart is the perspective I bring from years of working with complex populations in high-intensity treatment environments. Those experiences shaped my approach to counseling, which emphasizes self-accountability, emotional awareness, and helping clients develop practical tools to move forward with greater clarity and perspective. My goal is to create a space where individuals feel supported while also developing deeper insight into their experiences and the role they play in shaping their responses to life’s challenges.
I’m also proud of how the practice has grown over time. What began as a small practice I started in 2017 while working in a leadership role has evolved into a dedicated space for trauma-informed care. Today the practice primarily provides telehealth services across Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Delaware, while remaining open to professional collaborations within the region. At its core, the brand reflects my commitment to helping people develop deeper insight into their experiences so they can navigate life with greater understanding, intention, and perspective.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Throughout my career, there have been many people who have played a role in shaping my professional journey. Early on, the leadership at the rape crisis center where I volunteered had a significant impact on me. They trusted me with meaningful responsibilities and later invited me to serve as a counselor based on the feedback they were receiving from survivors and their families. That experience gave me early confirmation that I was on the right path and helped shape my commitment to trauma-informed work.
I’ve also had the opportunity to work alongside many dedicated professionals throughout my career in residential treatment and behavioral health settings. Those colleagues and teams taught me a great deal about collaboration, resilience, and the realities of working in complex systems that support vulnerable populations.
Equally important has been the support of my loved ones and family. Pursuing this field required years of education, training, and long hours, and there were times when the journey was challenging. My family created space for me while I was working toward my degrees and credentials, cheered me on along the way, invited me to meals when I needed a break, and offered words of encouragement and validation during difficult moments. Looking back, I truly recognize that I would not be where I am today without that support system, whether people were standing right beside me or supporting me from a distance.
I’m also deeply grateful for the individuals I’ve had the privilege of working with throughout my career. While protecting client confidentiality is essential, I can say that many of the lessons that have shaped my perspective as a therapist have come from listening to people’s stories and witnessing their strength and resilience. Those experiences continue to inform the way I approach my work today.
