Meet Clayton Kurtz of WebTek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clayton Kurtz.

Hi Clayton, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been at WebTek since I was in high school, and that’s really where the story starts. When I graduated, I looked at the traditional route and considered courses through HACC and Berks Technical, but when I reviewed their intro curriculums I realized I’d test out of most of it. Rather than sit through material I’d already worked past, I decided to keep learning on the job and teach myself the rest. I leaned on online platforms like Team Treehouse to go deeper, focusing on web development.

That turned out to be the right call for me. I spent years building websites, along with doing customer support and eventually support management. Working directly with clients on real technical problems taught me things a classroom wouldn’t have. I learned how projects come together, and where they tend to break.
About three years ago I moved into sales and consulting. Having done the hands-on work gives me a different starting point than most people in that seat, because when I sit down with a client I already know what’s involved in what they’re asking for. I’ve built it.

These days a lot of my focus is on AI and how it’s changing web design, SEO, and marketing. I’m most interested in where it helps our clients versus where it’s just noise.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No road is completely smooth, and mine hasn’t been either. My father started WebTek in 1999, so I didn’t just take a job here in high school. I grew up inside the business. That’s been one of the best parts of my life, but I’d be lying if I said working closely with family was always easy. When it’s your dad, the line between a work disagreement and a personal one can get blurry, and you have to learn how to have hard conversations without it following you home. I wouldn’t trade any of it, but it took some growing up on my part.

The other quiet challenge was earning my own footing. When you’re the founder’s kid, people can assume you’re only in the room because of your last name. I wanted to know I could actually do the work, which is a big reason I went deep on web development early on and put in the hours to get good at it. That mattered more to me than any title.

The biggest lesson, though, came from the clients. I’ve talked to hundreds, maybe thousands, of small business owners over the years, and it changed how I see this work. On the surface every business looks different, but underneath, most of them are wrestling with the same handful of problems: not enough of the right leads, not enough time, and no clear picture of what their marketing is actually getting them. Once I saw that pattern, my whole job became less about selling a service and more about helping people solve a problem they often couldn’t name yet.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about WebTek?
WebTek is a full-service web design and digital marketing agency. My father founded it in 1999, and we’ve been helping businesses build and grow their presence online ever since. We do web design and development, SEO, Google Ads, and broader digital marketing strategy, and we handle it all under one roof with an in-house team of designers, SEO specialists, and marketing people.

What sets us apart is how we start. A lot of agencies lead with a package: here’s the website, here’s the ad spend, sign here. We start with your business. Before I recommend anything, I want to understand how you actually operate, what your goals are, and what’s getting in your way. From there we figure out which services fit, rather than selling you the same bundle we sell everyone.

The part clients tell me they value most is that we run the numbers with them. If you want more leads, I want to know how many, and how much more work your team can realistically take on, and what an average sale is worth to you, and what your close rate is. Once we have those numbers, we can work backward into a realistic cost per lead and build a campaign that’s actually designed to hit your goal, not just spend a budget. If the full investment to get there is too much at once, we scale it down and build toward it over time. Marketing stops being a leap of faith and becomes math.

I think that comes from where we started. A lot of us came up doing the hands-on work. I spent years building websites myself before I ever moved into consulting, and that means when we make a recommendation, it’s grounded in what actually works, not a sales script. It also means we’ve seen the same problems across hundreds of small businesses, so we’re rarely solving something from scratch.
Brand-wise, the thing I’m most proud of is that we’re the agency people stay with. In an industry where a lot of shops build a site and disappear, we’re still picking up the phone years later.

If there’s one thing I’d want your readers to know, it’s this: you don’t need to know exactly what marketing service you need before you talk to us. That’s our job. Come tell us what you’re trying to accomplish, and we’ll help you figure out the rest.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories revolve around the vacations we took. As a family, we would go to the beach 2-3 times a year, as well as other weekend trips to the lake and other areas of PA. My favorite vacation was my first trip out west to visit family and explore Oregon and Montana. Hiking along the Oregon coast and exploring Yellowstone and Glacier National Park are unforgettable memories.
