Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Novak.
Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My path here didn’t follow a typical script. I started Glam On Demand while also learning to live with lupus, and building a business alongside a chronic illness taught me early that I had to work smarter, not harder, or my body would make the decision for me.
Eventually I took a corporate role with Benefit Cosmetics as and Account Manager, because of my diagnosis. I needed the stability, the structure, the benefits that come with a W-2. For a while it worked. Then COVID hit, and the role changed in ways my body simply couldn’t sustain. The workload, the pace, none of it left room for the flexibility lupus demands. I needed my time and my freedom back.
What I didn’t expect was how much that season sparked something else in me. I was solving problems constantly, not just for my own business but for the entrepreneurs and beauty professionals around me who were drowning in the same operational chaos I’d already fought my way through. That’s where Polished & Prosperous came from. It wasn’t a pivot away from beauty, it was the systems side of the same work I’d always been doing.
I eventually left corporate for good. Today both businesses are fully live, and I’m figuring out this next chapter in real time, over 40, independent, and building the kind of ecosystem I wish had existed for me when I was starting out.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, and I don’t think anyone building something real gets to say it was smooth. The honest answer is my struggles came from three directions at once.
The first was health. Lupus doesn’t operate on a business plan’s timeline. There were stretches where I had to scale back exactly when momentum said I should push forward, and learning to run a company around a body that doesn’t negotiate was its own education.
The second was financial. Building two businesses from the ground up meant lean years where revenue didn’t match the hours going in, and I had to get comfortable making decisions under that kind of pressure instead of waiting for certainty that wasn’t coming.
The third was one I created myself, overextension. I’m someone who gets energized by solving problems, which means my instinct is to build the system, launch the offer, take the client, start the next thing. Left unchecked, that instinct will build five systems when the business only has bandwidth for one. Learning to sequence my own ambition, to work on one thing at a time instead of everything at once, has probably been the harder lesson than any external circumstance.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I run two businesses that look different on the surface but come from the same root. Glam On Demand is a bridal and event beauty company, now in its fifteenth year serving Greater Philadelphia. Polished & Prosperous is a systems consulting practice, where I work with service-based entrepreneurs, coaches, creatives, wedding and beauty professionals to build the operational infrastructure that lets them actually run a business instead of just surviving one. Dubsado implementation, workflow automation, SOPs, CRM migrations, the kind of behind-the-scenes architecture that determines whether a business scales or stalls.
What I’m known for is being the person who sits at the intersection of both worlds. I understand the beauty industry from the inside, fifteen years of client-facing work, team management, brand building, and I understand systems and operations at a level most creative entrepreneurs never get access to. My SHRM-CP certification and years leading retail teams for corporate beauty that gave me the operational fluency. The beauty industry gave me the language and the trust of the clients I now serve.
What I’m most proud of is that I built both of these businesses while managing lupus, a condition that doesn’t care about deadlines or launch dates. Every system I’ve built, every business decision I’ve made, had to account for a body that sets its own terms. That constraint forced a level of intentionality most entrepreneurs never have to develop, and it’s shaped how I build for my clients too. I don’t design systems for the fantasy version of a business owner who has unlimited energy. I design for the real one.
What sets me apart is that combination, the lived experience of chronic illness and entrepreneurship, the corporate leadership background that most beauty professionals don’t have, and the rare fluency in both beauty and operations. Most consultants know systems. Most beauty professionals know the industry. Very few people can speak both languages fluently enough to build something that actually works for the humans running these businesses.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
That sequencing beats speed. For a long time I believed that being a good entrepreneur meant saying yes to everything at once, building the system, launching the offer, taking the client, starting the next idea, all in the same breath. I thought momentum looked like doing more, simultaneously.
What I’ve learned is the opposite is true. The businesses that actually work are the ones where you do one thing at a time, finish it, then move to the next. Trying to build five systems in parallel doesn’t get you to the finish line faster, it just means nothing is finished and everything is half built. I had to learn that discipline the hard way, and it’s now something I actively watch for, both in my own work and in the clients I consult for. Real ambition requires sequencing, without it you just get chaos wearing good intentions.
Pricing:
- Glam On Demand pricing varies by service, event size, and location, and is provided through a custom quote based on each client’s needs.
- Polished & Prosperous operates on a consultation-first model. Every engagement, whether it’s a single working session or a full custom Dubsado build, starts with a discovery call so pricing can reflect the actual scope of the work rather than a one-size-fits-all number.
