From Misguided Veteran Buyer to Division Leader: How a Flawed Real Estate Transaction Defined My Purpose
When I transitioned out of the U.S. Army into civilian life, I assumed utilizing my earned VA Home Loan benefits would be a straightforward, rewarding process. I was wrong.
The first agent I hired—a representative from a major traditional brokerage—pushed back the moment I mentioned using my VA loan. He claimed that VA offers were “too problematic,” hard to win in competitive markets, carried higher interest rates, and overall weren’t worth the hassle. Lacking the industry knowledge I have today, I trusted his advice and purchased my first home using an FHA loan instead.
That experience left a bitter taste in my mouth. The hesitancy, misinformation, and total lack of advocacy for a benefit I had earned through military service bothered me deeply. But instead of remaining frustrated, it sparked a curiosity about real estate that quickly turned into a passion.
As I began educating myself on loan structures, financing, and market strategy, I discovered the truth: the VA loan is one of the most powerful wealth-building tools available to military families. My agent hadn’t just given me bad advice—he had done me a profound disservice out of pure ignorance.
That moment became the catalyst for my second career. I made a commitment to become a true subject-matter expert and a local spearhead for VA buyers.
Today, I serve as the Team Leader of the Alexander Shulzhenko Team and an Executive Committee Member of the Compass Military Division. Operating alongside two dedicated agents, our team services the entire Philadelphia Metro area, Central and South New Jersey, and the Jersey Shore points.
Having closed hundreds of millions in real estate volume, I am proud to be recognized as one of the top agents in the Philadelphia regional market.
