Life & Work with Laura Houck of Pennsylvania

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Houck.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Laura and I have been the owner of Frosty Falls for the last five years. The previous owners were employers of mine. I was the general manager of one of their restaurants. They bought Frosty Falls across the street from one of their locations and didn’t really give it a lot of love. They definitely did not live up to its full potential. I came on board in the middle of 2020 to help a friend make this place super Covid friendly since it is all outside service. By August, the owners approached me with the opportunity to buy Frosty Falls off of them as they saw how much good I could put into the business. With the help of my husband and my parents, we made the decision to say yes. So in the beginning of 2021 I opened Frosty Falls is the new owner and we were having a very successful first run until September 1 when hurricane Ida made its way to Bridgeport. And that it’s still hard to believe how one storm could take away so much from one family. I live across the street from the shop so I really am fully engulfed in my community. But on September 2, floodwaters ravaged our business and our home and stole everything from us in a matter of minutes. On the same day, my brother lost his house to a tornado, not 10 miles away. Devastated, broken and poor, we made the decision to put everything into building our business back up where we were able to come back even stronger than before. With the support of our community and our families and friends, Frosty Falls was back up and running by the time that we reopened for our 2022 season. From there, I have been determined to make this place the most successful it could possibly be. In 2024, we received our first award as second place in Philly‘s favorite contest that was put out by the Philadelphia inquire. 2025 we took on first place in Montgomery County and in Philadelphia.
We have just continued to prove every effort is worth it. Every heartache can be fixed. Every dollar can be earned back through hard work and dedication. We have become the epicenter of our community. We do give backs weekly for local schools, organizations, and sports teams. All of our employees have basically been with us since day one as we are a family, not just coworkers. Every effort and every day is worth it and we just cannot wait to see where the future takes us.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hurricane Ida was our biggest hurdle, and as I hold its memory in my heart forever, I will never forget what was taken from me and why it’s so important to keep everything that we have.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We’re known for so many things. I would say that the things that I’m the most proud of our unique sundae options. Some of which I spent months designing with the perfect blends of flavors. There honestly too much to choose from our menu. People complain all the time that we have too much good stuff. Just gives them a reason to come back, which they always do. But beyond ice cream we are known for our delicious cookies, thick fudgy brownies, and on the weekends we make big ass cinnamon buns topped with the fresh is most delicious cream cheese frosting. We have a wide variety of gluten-free and dairy free options as well as vegan friendly items. There’s literally something for everyone and the inclusivity of that is what drives me to always keep adding more.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I am blessed with a wonderful circle of people who have surrounded me and supported me since the first day that I took over this business. My husband who has been the absolute backbone of my existence by taking care of me while I’m taking care of everything else. Everything from peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every morning to Saturday night foot rubs. Not only does he work full-time but he is the main provider of all repairs and everything that I don’t wanna have to do around the shop ha ha. My mother who financially has kept us afloat since the flood as well as emotionally. As a retired, single woman, I am grateful that she is willing to use her time to help us at the shop by working two days a week.
My children are incredible supporters. Two out of three of them have worked at the shop while the one remains at home taking care of the house where I have had to give up my title. I genuinely spend 14 hours a day outside of the house. So to come home to clean toilets and floors is amazing.
Most importantly, my amazing staff. I do not have a staffing issue, I do not even have enough hours to give to the people who will work for me. We have so much fun while literally working our asses off. These kids are not afraid of a little elbow, grease and know that every mess can be cleaned. We work hard and we laugh hard and most importantly together we are the greatest ice cream shop in the entire world.
