Life & Work with Kathleen Giangrande of Pennsylvania

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Giangrande.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story starts about 5 years ago when my sister in law who had had a cattery in North Carolina for 18 years. I always referred to her home as the “House of Happiness”. Being in a house full of litters of kittens I imagined was hard to be sad with the cuteness around every corner.
I had always been a dog owner till my 11 year old daughter wanted a kitten about a year before that. We spoke about the possibility of me raising some kittens for her business in my home and although there were obstacles we made it happen.
3 years ago Kelly and I thought it was time for me to start my own cattery and under her guidance that’s what happened. So here I am owner of a cattery.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the largest obstacle i had was getting into a rhythm as far as knowing how many litters I had space for and timing their births, and other milestones like when to move from welping/ secluded area to the living space. When to introduce food and start weening and introduce litterbox. Also the administration of shots and other medicines like deworming.
Another large part of growing a cattery is speaking with people. Screening people and families. To ensure the kittens that go to their forever home are going to be a perfect match. Helping 1st time cat owners to prepare their home for a kitten.
Researching litter, food, vaccines, toys etc. And making sure the kittens and adult cats have the safest supplies to help them grow and be healthy.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I raise pure bread Siamese and Balinese kittens. My kittens are raised in a busy, loving home environment. By which I mean I have children from age 1 to 34 living in my home. We also have 3 dogs an American bulldog, an Australian shepherd and a German shepherd. The kittens born here are handled and loved from the moment the are born. My kittens grow loving and trusting people so they will not run and hide from people. I can call a cat in my house by name and they’ll come over. Some “cat homes” visitors never know there is a cat living there.
My biggest satisfaction in my business is matching a human and feline companionship. I am not just selling kittens, I pair companions.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is that the kittens my cattery produces all go to loving, lifetime homes with families that love and adore them.
