Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Lee Newman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve spent my life seeking to interpret the fleeting beauty and bounty of the world around us. I grew up in the Midwest with a curious and adventurous heart, endlessly digging in the dirt, gardening with my mom and hunting/camping with my father. Outside was our babysitter and teacher.
After studying fine art and beginning my career as an artist, moving to Brooklyn, NY to continue on that path. After dabeling in many forms of creativity (french style wedding cake baker/decorator, studio artisan, artist assistant, stage design etc.) I realized my passion was to cultivate the ways in which art and nature nourish and uplift the human body and spirit. I missed working with nature.
Desiring to bring my visions to life, I formed Sweet Thorn Flora — creating floral displays individually tailored to each wedding and special event that I design. Helping to emote the desired feelings and create a lasting impression.
After my 12 years in Brooklyn, my husband and I bought a house further from the city. I then migrated Sweet Thorn Flora out here to and found a wonderful community in Easton, PA – expanding my working area too.
I look forward to all the new opportunities and future prospects as my business evolves and grows.
xx Jaime Lee
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not an easy road – There have been many learning curves, as to be expected when starting a business and teaching yourself for the most part from scratch.
The hardest to hurdle – was getting my first clients and then trusting that I could accomplish what I set out to do.
With this line of work, there is always problem salving involved! Always. Which is also why I love it, problem solving and seeing what solutions we come up with is actually part of the fun… after we figure it out, ha.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Technically I am called a floral designer but I actually connect more with space transformer. Florals bring a life and feeling to spaces that not much else can. I often say the florals make the event. They make it colorful, cheerful, moody, romantic, fun, modern, classic – whatever you want to emote to your guests! They are very versatile.
I hold myself to a high standard with attention to detail, creativity and an unwavering desire to make each floral piece the best it can be – every floral piece and design is like a work of art to me, so much love and energy goes into each piece.
