Life & Work with Denise Bones of Philadelphia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Bones.

Hi Denise, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started cake decorating with a course I took at home through Wilton. I worked at an ice cream store for two years, a bakery for four years, and then my husband, mom, and I opened a bakery in 1990 in Berwyn, PA where I grew up. Since then, we have done nothing but grow year by year. I got to where I am today through sheer will and work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been far from a smooth road, primarily due to the intense workload, demanding hours, and the personal sacrifices required to run a business, including missing family events. Being a hands-on owner requires my constant presence.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the owner of Clay’s Bakery in Berwyn, PA. We are a family-owned business and have been since we opened in 1990. I feel completely part of the community where I grew up and went to school.

I take great pride in our meticulous attention to detail and the diverse palette of colors I blend to produce unique cakes. I also take pride in the genuine relationships I build with our customers. It is a privilege to know that many of our clients have been ordering cakes from us for over 30 years, marking everything from baby showers to weddings and birthdays with our creations. I am also proud of the fact that we have been able to maintain and elevate the quality of our work over 3 decades.

We specialize in buttercream decorations which is something that not all bakeries specialize in. Additionally, the way we try to stay new and fresh every day is what makes us stand out.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am in a constant state of designing cakes in my mind, especially on my way to sleep at night. I also have five children and seven beautiful grandchildren, many of whom have grown up in the business.
