Life & Work with Coultan Lucas of Pennsylvania

Today we’d like to introduce you to Coultan Lucas.

Hi Coultan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into photography started as a creative outlet during high school when I was around 16. It began as a hobby taking photos of friends and all of our hiking/camping adventures. Eventually, I started doing sessions for people ranging from family photos, couples, and seniors.

During the beginning years, I dedicated myself to learning the craft, investing in education, refining my editing style, and gaining hands-on experience with a variety of sessions. As my skills and confidence grew, I started to feel more confident in actually making this hobby into a business.

Skip forward to 2023, I got asked to photograph my first wedding, and with an unexpected layoff from my job at the time, I decided to fully pursue this as a business.

After that first wedding, I was hooked. I fell in love with documenting one of the most important days in a couple’s life. From the emotion of the day to the wide variety of photography you do during the day.

Today, I operate a full-time photography business specializing in weddings, couples, families, and portraits. My approach focuses on creating genuine, timeless images that allow people to relive their memories for years to come. As a husband and father of three, I understand how quickly life changes and how valuable photographs become over time. That perspective influences the way I document every session and wedding day.

Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for how far photography has taken me. What started as an interest has grown into a career that allows me to serve others, be creative, and preserve moments that matter most.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. When you first start a business, it’s easy to think that clients will just find you and bookings will start rolling in. In reality, that’s far from the truth.

At first, you have friends and family who are willing to support you, spread your name, and even book sessions. But once that initial support slows down, you’re left with the challenge of learning how to actually run a business and attract clients consistently.

I’ve had to learn everything from marketing and customer experience to the behind-the-scenes aspects of running a business, like contracts, invoicing, payments, and workflows. It’s been a constant process of learning, adapting, and improving. Three years later, I finally feel like I’ve reached a point where things are more consistent and people in my area recognize my name and my work.

On top of that, there are significant financial investments involved. Camera equipment, lenses, software, education, insurance, and other business expenses all add up quickly. There have been plenty of moments where I questioned whether the investment of time, money, and energy would pay off.

Looking back, though, every challenge taught me something valuable. Those struggles helped shape both the business owner and photographer I am today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a wedding and portrait photographer specializing in capturing genuine, emotional moments in a way that feels timeless and true to each couple’s story. While weddings are the heart of my business, I also photograph families, couples, and seniors, focusing on creating images that feel natural rather than overly posed.

What I’m known for is my ability to help people feel comfortable in front of the camera. Most of my couples tell me they aren’t photogenic or don’t know what to do during photos, and I take pride in creating an experience where they can simply be themselves. My goal is to document real moments, real emotions, and the connections that matter most.

What I’m most proud of is building this business from the ground up while also raising a growing family. Over the past three years, I’ve worked hard to not only improve my craft as a photographer but also create an experience that serves my clients well from the first inquiry to the final gallery delivery. Seeing couples trust me with one of the most important days of their lives is something I never take for granted.

I believe what sets me apart is the combination of storytelling and service. Beautiful photos are important, but I want my clients to feel cared for throughout the entire process. I strive to be more than just a photographer on the wedding day. I want to be a calming presence, a helpful resource, and someone my couples can trust completely. At the end of the day, I want them to walk away with not only images they love but an experience they’ll remember just as fondly.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The best way to work with me is simply to reach out. Whether you’re planning a wedding, looking for family portraits, celebrating an engagement, or documenting another important season of life, I’d love to hear your story and see how I can help bring it to life through photography.

I’m also always open to collaborating with other creatives, wedding vendors, and local businesses who value authentic storytelling and creating great experiences for their clients. Some of my favorite opportunities have come through relationships and partnerships within the community.

For those who want to support my business, referrals mean the world to me. Many of my couples and families find me through recommendations from past clients, friends, and fellow vendors. Sharing my work, recommending me to someone looking for a photographer, or simply engaging with my content online all make a bigger impact than most people realize.

At the end of the day, I’m incredibly grateful for every person who trusts me to document their memories and every supporter who helps my small business continue to grow.
