Hi Obinna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I originally moved from New Jersey to Philadelphia back in 2019, right before the pandemic. That was the pivotal moment I decided to leave corporate life and start working for myself as an event space manager. I ran that original space for about two years, but when COVID hit, I had to pivot.
That challenge opened the door to my next big venture: acquiring Haven Hall at 3528 Wharton Street. We launched the event space on the second floor, and about two years later, we expanded downstairs by opening Haven Café. My vision for the café was to create a true community hub—a space focused on giving back to the neighborhood through great drinks, delicious entrees, and genuine warmth.
We just celebrated our third anniversary this past August 15th, and looking ahead, our goal is to expand to new locations by 2027. At the end of the day, what drives us is our deep connection to the community, seeing our regular customers every day, and serving everyone who walks through our doors with a smile.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road! I had zero background in the culinary world when I started, so stepping into Haven Café was a massive learning curve.
Everything—from calibrating the espresso machine and preparing cold brews to mastering recipes, refining ingredients, and scaling up to cook for catering orders of over 100 people—I had to learn on the fly.
It’s a challenge I’m still tackling every day, but I enjoy the challenge. Instead of being overwhelmed by what I don’t know, I’ve grown to truly love the café and enjoy the process of learning as I go.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our customers often describe Haven Café as a place that truly connects with you. That personal connection is really what sets us apart from other spots.
We love staying deeply rooted in our community. We feature local events on our community board and even have a fun tradition of taking photos of our regulars once they’ve visited a certain number of times, just to celebrate them and build real relationships.
Beyond the connection, our foundation is exceptional quality. We’re known for food and drinks that don’t just look visually appealing on social media, but taste just as good. We have hundreds of reviews backing up the quality of our menu. But at the end of the day, while people might come in for great coffee or a fulfilling meal, what keeps them coming back and what I’m most proud of, brand-wise is the warmth, familiarity, and genuine sense of belonging they feel the moment they walk through our doors.
What’s next?
Our main focus for the future is expansion. Our goal is to open three new locations by the end of 2028.
As we grow, it’s not just about adding more physical spaces; it’s about scaling our reach so we can connect with and support even more people across different neighborhoods. We want to take the mission, warmth, and community-first culture that makes Haven Café so special and bring that exact experience to new communities.
