Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Walter Copeland II.
Hi Dr. Walter, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My Story
My journey has been one of growth, transformation and a commitment to helping others recognize their potential.
I began my entrepreneurial journey in October 2011 when I established WC Fitness, where I developed a passion for helping individuals improve their health and overall well-being. As my experience grew, I realized that meaningful transformation extends beyond physical fitness. It also involves education, financial empowerment, personal development and creating opportunities for others. This broader vision eventually led me to transition WC Fitness into Health is Wealth Consulting Group.
My professional journey has also expanded into higher education, healthcare leadership and entrepreneurship. Today, I am a professor, author, entrepreneur and speaker with a Doctor of Medical Science degree. I have the privilege of teaching at several universities, helping students develop the knowledge, confidence and critical-thinking skills needed to succeed beyond the classroom. My commitment to addressing health disparities also inspired my doctoral research on the intersection of social determinants of health and diabetes outcomes among Black men.
Through Health is Wealth Consulting Group, I continue to promote a holistic approach to health, financial wellness, leadership and personal development. I believe that empowering individuals with the right knowledge and resources can create meaningful change in their lives and communities.
Another significant milestone in my journey has been establishing Péland House Publishing, a publishing company that allows me to share my work and create opportunities for other authors. My books, including The Success Catalyst and The Black Wellness Blueprint, reflect my commitment to personal growth, leadership, health and empowerment. My publishing journey is also creating opportunities to connect with a broader audience and share my work with readers through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Throughout my career, I have learned that growth often requires stepping outside your comfort zone, embracing new opportunities and being willing to reinvent yourself. Whether I am teaching in a classroom, facilitating a workshop, speaking at a conference or working with aspiring entrepreneurs, my purpose remains the same: to help people recognize their potential and create opportunities for themselves and others.
Looking back, I recognize that every chapter of my journey, including the challenges and unexpected transitions, has helped prepare me for where I am today. I believe success is not defined solely by personal accomplishments but also by the lives we impact, the opportunities we create and the legacy we leave behind.
And I believe I am still just getting started.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has certainly not been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I have experienced challenges, setbacks and moments when I had to reassess my direction. However, I have learned that obstacles are often opportunities for growth, even when we cannot recognize them at the time.
One of my greatest challenges has been balancing multiple responsibilities while continuing to pursue my personal and professional goals. Building a business, advancing my education and establishing a career in higher education required discipline, sacrifice and a willingness to step outside my comfort zone. There were times when I had to make difficult decisions about where to invest my time, energy and resources.
Entrepreneurship has also taught me the importance of adaptability. When I established WC Fitness in 2011, my primary focus was physical health and wellness. As my interests and professional experiences evolved, I recognized the need to expand my vision. Transitioning into Health is Wealth Consulting Group required me to rethink my business model, develop new skills and embrace opportunities beyond my original plans.
Another important lesson has been understanding that success does not happen overnight. There have been moments of uncertainty, unexpected changes and situations that did not unfold as I had envisioned. Rather than allowing those experiences to define my future, I learned to adjust my approach, remain committed to my goals and continue moving forward.
Perhaps the most valuable lesson I have learned is that growth requires patience, resilience and the ability to believe in your vision even when the results are not immediately visible. I have also learned that it is important to surround yourself with people who encourage your growth and challenge you to become better.
Today, I view challenges differently. I no longer see them simply as barriers but as experiences that have strengthened my perspective, shaped my leadership and prepared me for new opportunities. My journey has taught me that we cannot always control the circumstances we encounter, but we can control how we respond to them.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Health Is Wealth Consulting/ Péland House Publishing?
My work is centered on a simple belief: when individuals have access to knowledge, resources and opportunities, they are better positioned to transform their lives and create lasting change.
As the founder and CEO of Health is Wealth Consulting Group, I focus on health and wellness, leadership development, financial education and personal empowerment. Through consulting, educational workshops, speaking engagements and professional development programs, I help individuals and organizations identify opportunities for growth and develop practical strategies for success. My background in healthcare leadership, higher education and entrepreneurship allows me to bring together different perspectives to address real-world challenges.
I am also the founder of Péland House Publishing, a publishing company dedicated to sharing meaningful stories, promoting education and creating opportunities for aspiring authors. My books, including The Success Catalyst and The Black Wellness Blueprint, reflect my commitment to personal growth, leadership, health and empowerment. My publishing journey is also creating opportunities to connect with a broader audience through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
What distinguishes my work is the integration of education, health, business and leadership. I believe these areas are interconnected and that addressing them collectively can create meaningful opportunities for individuals and communities.
Whether I am working with an organization, facilitating a workshop, teaching students or developing my next book, my mission remains the same: to empower people with the knowledge, confidence and resources to recognize their potential and take meaningful steps toward their goals.
Ultimately, I want my businesses to represent more than the services they provide. I want them to serve as platforms for education, empowerment and lasting impact, creating opportunities that extend beyond my own lifetime.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe mentorship and networking are essential to both personal and professional growth. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is that you do not have to navigate every opportunity or challenge alone. Surrounding yourself with individuals who are willing to share their knowledge, experiences and perspectives can make a significant difference in your journey.
My advice for finding a mentor is to seek individuals whose values, experiences and accomplishments align with where you want to go. A mentor does not necessarily have to work in your profession. Some of the most valuable lessons can come from people in entirely different industries who challenge your thinking and introduce you to new perspectives. Equally important, mentorship should be built on genuine relationships, mutual respect and a willingness to learn.
When it comes to networking, I believe in building meaningful relationships rather than simply collecting contacts. Throughout my journey in higher education, healthcare and entrepreneurship, I have learned the importance of being intentional about connecting with others, attending professional events, participating in community initiatives and remaining open to unexpected opportunities.
I also believe networking should be reciprocal. It is not just about what someone can do for you, but also about how you can support others. Whether I am sharing resources, connecting individuals with opportunities or mentoring someone who is beginning their professional journey, I try to approach every relationship with a spirit of collaboration.
One of the most important things that has worked for me is maintaining relationships over time. Sometimes, the people you connect with during one chapter of your life become instrumental in opening doors during another. In fact, this interview is a wonderful example of how a relationship established during my WC Fitness years has created a new opportunity to share my story.
My advice is simple: be intentional about the relationships you build, remain authentic, never stop learning and remember to open doors for others as you continue moving forward. The strongest networks are built on trust, consistency and genuine connections, not simply professional titles or accomplishments.
