Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Winters.
Hi Sasha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a young black girl in America you are often asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. They usually are not expecting the answer to be “A Therapist”. I was taught to believe that I could be anything I wanted to be. What I witnessed was the women in my immediate family choosing careers that “made sense”. That put food on the table. That promised a paycheck each week. I wanted more than just a job. I wanted a career and flexibility. Those were the aspirations of my young mind.
In high school, I had my first psych class. I fell in love with the brain and how it works! I connected the dream of personal freedom with helping others realize their brains could be free too! I went to Shippensburg University for my Bachelors in Psychology with a Minor in Disability Studies. While there we suffered the tragedy of losing our son in pregnancy. Amongst other things it grew my passion to continue to want to help others through the hardest times in their lives.
I went on to receive my Masters of Science in Professional Counseling for Grand Canyon University. I graduated in November of 2020 and started my first position as a PreLicensed clinician. Yes in the HEIGHT of COVID. At this point Ive caught on to the theme that my life consist of trial by fire. A baby therapist – helping people through one of the worst times in our country!
In the following years, I continued to set the mission to helping those through the most difficult times. I obtained my certification as a Trauma Professional in 2021; while working as a Substance Use Counselor. To this day I continue to uphold my trauma certification and obtain additional knowledge in the specialty. From 2020 to the current period of time I also obtain my National Certified Counselor certification, EMDR Certification, CAMs Training, and my License as a Professional Counselor through the state of Pennsylvania.
The Wellnes Center DBA Winters Wellnes was born in a journal around 2022 as I studied for my licensing exam. Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is never a smooth road. It is about making the best of each moment. Not only did we go through greif of our son. We became homeless several times. In college I had to choose between gas in my car to make it to class or food to eat to focus to study. I am still a parent of young children which requires logistic changes; sometimes without notice. They also deserve and require a majority of my attention and time. I have had cars repoed. I was given promises by companies that were never fulfilled. Turned down for financing and more. Where we currently are was built soley on personal finances, sweat and tears.
We’ve been impressed with The Wellnes Center DBA Winters Wellnes, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
