Hidden Gems: Meet Robert Beal of Mr. Rooter Plumbing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Beal.

Hi Robert , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has been anything but ordinary. I was born 75% blind, and from an early age I learned that challenges don’t have to define your future. Instead of focusing on limitations, I focused on determination, hard work, and finding solutions.

I became a Master Plumber and have dedicated more than 40 years to the plumbing industry. Throughout my career, I’ve built a business based on honesty, quality workmanship, and exceptional customer service. Today, I’m proud to lead a team of nearly 50 employees who share the same commitment to helping our customers and supporting one another.

Beyond running a successful business, I’m passionate about mentoring others, creating opportunities for my team, and giving back to my community. I believe great leadership is about serving people, building trust, and leading by example. My story is proof that perseverance, resilience, and a positive attitude can overcome even the toughest obstacles.

I continue to learn, grow, and inspire others every day, showing that success isn’t determined by the challenges you’re born with—it’s determined by the mindset you choose and the impact you make.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any business owner, I’ve faced my share of challenges. The ups and downs of the economy have affected everything from material costs to customer spending, and learning how to adapt has been a constant part of running the business.

One of the biggest ongoing challenges has been finding and keeping skilled, dependable employees. The trades industry has experienced a shortage of qualified workers, so recruiting, training, and developing a strong team has required a significant investment of time and effort.

As someone born with 75% blindness, I’ve also had to overcome personal obstacles throughout my career. I’ve learned to adapt, work smarter, and never let my disability define what I could achieve.

There have also been challenges with managing business growth, staying ahead of changing technology, navigating new regulations, and balancing the responsibilities of leadership while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Every obstacle has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of surrounding yourself with great people.

Looking back, those struggles helped shape the company we are today. They taught me that success isn’t about avoiding challenges—it’s about learning, adapting, and continuing to move forward no matter what comes your way.

We’ve been impressed with Mr. Rooter Plumbing, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

One of the biggest tools that helps me run my business is ServiceTitan, which keeps our operations organized and helps us deliver excellent customer service. Outside of the business, I’ve invested a lot of time into building my personal brand, Bob Is the Plumber.
