Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Rose Marion.
Hi Melissa Rose, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up constantly adapting—I attended four different high schools, which taught me early on how to adjust quickly to new environments and challenges. No matter where I was, I found my place through the performing arts. I was deeply involved in marching band, performed as a jazz vocalist, participated in theater, and played volleyball, all while maintaining strong academics and graduating with honors.
At that point, I fully expected my future to revolve around the arts. In fact, during my senior year, I joined my first band. The dental field wasn’t on my radar at all. However, entrepreneurship was always present in my life—my father is an entrepreneur, and looking back, I can see how much that mindset influenced me.
Right after high school, I explored a variety of jobs, including selling timeshares at a resort in Ocean City. Eventually, I moved to Texas and took a position as a billing administrator at DFW International Airport. While that role taught me valuable skills, I quickly realized I didn’t want to spend my career in a cubicle.
Everything changed when I was introduced to an orthodontic office willing to train someone with no prior experience. After a personality assessment, I was hired—and on my very first day, I was working directly with patients. I immediately connected with the hands-on nature of the work and quickly grew into my role as an orthodontic and dental assistant, spending years building my skills across multiple practices.
In 2013, I transitioned into the dental lab side of the industry, starting in the model room. I quickly worked my way through different departments and eventually became a production manager. Around that time, I was inspired by a colleague to go back to school, and I pursued my Bachelor’s in Business Administration while working full-time, raising five children, and continuing to perform in multiple bands. I often completed schoolwork on the road and in dressing rooms—it took me five years, but I earned my degree in 2020.
During my time in the lab, I also invested heavily in continuing education, earning my PTC certification in SPA and becoming a certified digital specialist with 3Shape. I traveled throughout the Tri-State area, training dentists and their teams on implementing digital scanning technology, which gave me deep insight into the future of dental labs and digital workflows.
The COVID-19 pandemic was a challenging time, and I found myself putting in the kind of hours and effort typically expected of an owner. That experience, combined with everything I had learned, led me to a realization: I might just have enough knowledge—and determination—to build something of my own.
In 2022, I launched First Impressionz Dental Lab in Lancaster. The early days were anything but easy. I had to borrow from friends and family just to make payroll at times, and I learned some hard lessons—especially about the importance of having a strong accountant and bookkeeper in place from the start. Those challenges ultimately shaped how I run my business today.
About a year in, I was approached with an opportunity to purchase another lab I had previously worked with. I took the leap. I relocated Advanced Dental Lab from Lebanon to Lancaster so it could operate alongside First Impressionz, allowing us to share resources, talent, and a unified vision for growth.
What started with just two employees has grown into a team of twelve—and we’re still expanding. We’ve also been honored as Lancaster’s Best for two consecutive years, in 2025 and 2026, which is something I’m incredibly proud of.
Looking back, my journey has been anything but linear—from performing arts to dentistry to business ownership—but the common thread has always been adaptability, continuous learning, and a willingness to take risks. I’m deeply grateful for the support system that helped me along the way and proud of what we’ve built.
**“I didn’t set out to build this path—but I built it anyway, one opportunity at a time.”**
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t been smooth—raising five kids, finishing my degree, and starting a business all at once tested me in ways I never imagined. Cash flow struggles, long hours, and early missteps taught me resilience and the importance of building the right team. Every challenge ended up preparing me to lead my labs with confidence.
