Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph DeFranco.
Hi Joseph, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
. J DeFranco & Daughters is an off-premise catering service. The DeFranco business started in 1926 by Philip and Theodora DeFranco. At that time the business was an Italian grocery store and butcher shop. After their retirement in 1976 they gave the business to their son Martin DeFranco who moved the shop from Roseto to West Bangor where the business is today. In 1989, Joseph took over the family business and complimented the fine meats that his family once sold by preparing and serving the foods off premise. Today Joe has made the company grow into a seven day a week business with catering services available anytime.
At J. DeFranco and Daughters we specialize in Italian Cuisine, but also offer a variety of other menu selections. We offer butler service, buffet style, country style service and we also will simply deliver your selections and set up your event. All of our orders are custom and will be served or delivered anyway our customers prefer. We have catered events as small as a romantic dinner for two and as large as weddings with as many as 250 guests. No job is too big or small.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
covid put us in a position from doing weddings from 100 guest to 10 so we started a deli and had curb side pickup . many pizzerias started to cater so we started making pizza
As you know, we’re big fans of J.DeFranco and Daughters. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am the chef we specialize in Food from Roseto Valfortore . we make authentic fresh made foods from scratch. We use our Bucher shop back ground to process our meats like Italian sausage and grind our own beef to make meatballs. Brand wise our Italian sausage , Our town of Roseto has quite a history , it was one the first boroughs in the United States to become incorporated. In the mid Sixties Dr Stewart Wolf did a study that proved Roseto had the lowest Heart attack’s in the Us . The reason was the cohesion of it’s people the the book is called Power of the tribe. I wrote a book about growing up in the butcher shop in he sixties it is called Growling up in the butcher shop When my wife Joelene joined the business improved immensely As a license florist our food presentation and banquet service became more beautiful I make it taste good she makes it look good she gets you in the eye I Get you in the mouth
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
As all the blouse mills in the area closed I purchased a house had a daughter and lost my job . My grandmother , set me up to do our first catering job . She said the Roseto seniors have a Christmas party every year and the food is terrible .So I booked Us to do it . ..There were 5 butcher shops in Roseto , the word on the street was if you want quality go to DeFrancos.
