Hidden Gems: Meet Divya Jayaraj of MathMeg Online Tutoring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Divya Jayaraj.

Hi Divya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey with MathMeg started from a very personal place. My educational background is in business—I hold a Master’s in International Business (MIB)—but as my own family grew, education became an increasingly important part of my life.

I am a mother of two boys, one currently in 10th grade and the other in 6th grade. Being actively involved in their education helped me understand something that eventually became the foundation of MathMeg: every child learns differently. Even two children growing up in the same home can have completely different strengths, interests, learning styles, and academic needs.

Like many parents, I found myself constantly thinking about whether my children were truly understanding concepts, where they might need additional support, and how I could help them become more confident and independent learners. I realized that many other parents were asking themselves the same questions.

That is where the idea for MathMeg began.

I wanted to create the kind of educational support I would want for my own children—personalized, flexible, and centered around the individual student. I strongly believe that sometimes a child doesn’t need more hours of instruction; they simply need the right teacher, the right explanation, and someone who understands how they learn.

MathMeg started small. In the beginning, I was personally involved in almost everything—speaking with parents, understanding each student’s needs, finding the right tutors, coordinating schedules, following up after classes, and listening carefully to feedback.

We didn’t grow overnight. We grew one student and one family at a time, and many families found us through referrals from other parents. That has always meant a great deal to me because when a parent recommends MathMeg, they are trusting us with something incredibly important—their child’s education.

Today, MathMeg provides personalized one-on-one tutoring across Math, English, Science, SAT/PSAT and ACT preparation, AP courses, coding, MCAT preparation, college admissions counseling, and other academic areas. As we have grown, I have tried to make sure we never lose the personal connection that has been at the heart of MathMeg from the very beginning.

My Master’s in International Business gave me the foundation to understand strategy, communication, management, and how to build an organization. But being a mother gave me the perspective that shaped MathMeg’s purpose. Raising a middle schooler and a high schooler allows me to experience many of the same academic decisions, challenges, and milestones as the parents we work with every day.

Some of the most rewarding moments for me aren’t about business growth. They are when a parent tells me their child finally understands a subject they once struggled with, when a student’s test score improves, or when a child who once said, “I’m not good at this,” starts believing, “I can do this.”

Building MathMeg while raising my family has taught me that entrepreneurship isn’t always about starting with a perfect plan. Sometimes it begins with recognizing a need, believing there is a better way, and having the courage to start.

Today, I am incredibly grateful for every parent, student, and educator who has become part of our journey. As MathMeg continues to grow, my goal is simple: to reach more students while keeping education personal.

I still approach every major decision with one question: “Would this be the kind of educational experience I would want for my own children?” That question has guided MathMeg from the beginning, and I hope it always will.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I believe the challenges have been some of the most important parts of my journey.

One of my biggest challenges has been building MathMeg while also being a mother of two boys, now in 10th and 6th grade. As any working parent knows, balancing family responsibilities with building a business can be difficult. There have been many late nights and early mornings, and I’ve had to learn how to be present for my children while also being available for the families, students, and educators who depend on MathMeg.

Another challenge was earning parents’ trust, especially in the beginning. Education is very personal, and parents are trusting us with their children and their academic future. I knew that trust couldn’t be built through advertising alone—it had to be earned through consistency, communication, and results. Fortunately, as students began making progress, parents started referring other families to us, and those referrals became an important part of our growth.

Finding the right educators has also been a learning experience. For me, having strong subject knowledge is only one part of being a great tutor. A teacher also needs patience, communication skills, and the ability to connect with a student. Every child learns differently, so finding the right student-tutor match can sometimes take time.

As MathMeg has grown, another challenge has been maintaining the same level of personal attention we provided when we were much smaller. Growth is exciting, but I never want a family to feel like they are simply a number. Maintaining quality while expanding has required me to constantly improve our processes, listen to feedback, and stay personally connected to our families and tutors.

There have certainly been moments when things didn’t go according to plan. But those experiences taught me to adapt quickly, listen more carefully, and keep improving.

My background in International Business gave me a strong foundation for entrepreneurship, but actually building a business has taught me lessons that no classroom could fully prepare me for—especially about resilience, relationships, leadership, and patience.

Looking back, I wouldn’t remove the difficult parts of the journey. They shaped both me and MathMeg. Every challenge pushed me to build something stronger, and they continue to remind me that meaningful growth doesn’t happen overnight—it happens through consistency, learning, and the willingness to keep moving forward.

As you know, we’re big fans of MathMeg Online Tutoring. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
MathMeg is a personalized online tutoring organization focused on helping students become stronger, more confident, and independent learners. We provide one-on-one tutoring for students from elementary through high school in Math, English, Science, SAT/PSAT and ACT preparation, AP courses, coding, and other academic areas. We also offer **MCAT preparation** for aspiring medical students and **comprehensive College Counseling services**, including academic and career guidance, college selection, application support, essay guidance, and admissions planning.

What sets MathMeg apart is our personalized approach. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all tutoring. We take time to understand each student’s strengths, learning gaps, personality, and goals, and then carefully match them with the right tutor. We also maintain close communication with parents so they feel involved and informed throughout their child’s learning journey.

What I am most proud of is the trust we have built with our families. Much of our growth has come through parent referrals and word-of-mouth, which means a lot to me. Even as we grow, I want MathMeg to maintain that personal connection.

At MathMeg, our goal goes beyond improving grades and test scores. We want students to understand concepts, build confidence, and start believing in what they are capable of. That combination of personalized education, dedicated educators, and genuine care is what I want the MathMeg brand to always represent.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is growing up surrounded by a large group of cousins. Our holidays and family gatherings were always filled with laughter, games, conversations, and time together. Growing up with so many different personalities taught me important lessons about sharing, adjusting, communicating, resolving differences, and building strong relationships.

My father was also a strong influence in my childhood. As a political leader in our local community, I watched him listen to people, understand their concerns, and take responsibility for helping others. From him, I learned that leadership is not about a position—it is about listening, serving others, taking responsibility, and earning people’s trust.

Looking back, these simple experiences shaped many of the values I carry today—family, relationships, leadership, and responsibility. As a mother of two boys and an entrepreneur, I try to pass those same values on to my children and create meaningful memories with them.
