Exploring Life & Business with Salvatore Sciorta of Plumbing Pros

Today we’d like to introduce you to Salvatore Sciorta.

Hi Salvatore, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Staten Island, New York, and moved to New Jersey when I was about nine years old. My parents are both from Brooklyn, so I grew up around that tough, no excuses mentality from the start.

I started working the day I graduated high school, but my work ethic started long before that. I played football at Monroe Township High School and earned a varsity starting spot starting my sophomore year. That built a lot of discipline in me early, showing up, being accountable, and pushing through when you do not feel like it. That carried over into everything I have done since.

Before I even graduated, I was already working summers with my father, Salvatore Sciorta, a master plumber. He is old school and made it very clear early on that nothing would be handed to me. If I wanted something, I had to earn it. He got me comfortable with hard work and skilled labor at a young age, and looking back, I am extremely grateful for that.

My father eventually started his own company called Salamanda, a name he came up with by combining Sal and my sister Amanda, with a salamander as the logo. That was really my first exposure to what it looks like to build something from nothing.

A lot of my mindset also comes from what he went through. He was working near the World Trade Center during 9 11 and his job was directly affected. At that time, he had a family, kids, and had just bought a home in New Jersey. Then about two weeks later, he woke up with a large tumor on his neck.

Most people would have folded under that kind of pressure, but he did not. He pushed forward and started his own company. Watching that growing up stuck with me. It showed me that when life hits you, you do not sit around feeling sorry for yourself. You figure it out.

He always told me, “When you are a grown man, nobody cares about your problems, go make it happen.” That is how I live.

I started my career working with him in New Jersey. He was a union guy and did not like service work, so we mainly did new construction, roughing in houses. We were doing around 30 homes a year, and that is where I really learned the trade.

After about five years, I felt like I had grown into my own, but working with family can be tough. I did not feel like I was being respected at the level I was operating at. No bad blood, it just felt like it was time for me to go do my own thing.

I applied around and ended up getting offers from ConEd and the MTA. The MTA hired me first, and I spent six years there. It was a great job, six figures, benefits, pension, everything people work for. But I just was not happy. I was on track to become a foreman, but I knew I wanted more.

So I took the risk.

I got licensed and started building my business while still working nights in Manhattan. During the day I was running Plumbing Pros in Easton, taking calls, doing jobs, figuring everything out as I went. It was nonstop. I would get home, go to shower, and then another call would come in and I would throw my clothes back on and go back out.

I remember landing my first big sewer job. The profit from that one job was more than I made in a month at my union job. That was the moment everything clicked for me.

Leaving the MTA was not easy. My family was nervous. I was walking away from security. Now I joke that I pay a mortgage just for health insurance, but I believed in what I was building.

From there, it just kept growing. Pickup truck to my first van. First van to building a real brand. Then hiring guys. Then learning the hard side of business, hiring, firing, managing people, making mistakes, fixing them, and just staying in the fight.

Today we have 11 employees, 5 vehicles, and we are a multi million dollar company serving the Lehigh Valley. We have helped over 2,000 customers and built over 575 five star reviews on Google.

As we grew, I rebranded into a superhero style brand, The Plumbing Pro, with the slogan The Shield Your Home Deserves. It is something people remember, but more importantly, it represents what we stand for.

We have also expanded into HVAC because customers kept asking for it. I hold a Master Plumber’s license and a New Jersey Master HVAC license, and I partnered with my business coach, Mike Cantilina, to build a sister company, HVAC Pros.

At the core of everything we do is simple, treat people right and do the job right.

I have always believed you treat every customer like family. Every job should be something you would be proud to put your name on. Clean work. Code compliant. The kind of work where an inspector can walk in and immediately know you take pride in what you do.

There is only one way to do it, and that is the right way.

My father never failed a plumbing inspection his entire career, hundreds, probably thousands. I have never failed one in my 14 years either. That is the standard we hold our team to.

We focus on five star service and leaving every customer better off than when we got there. As we grow, the goal is to become the biggest plumbing company in the Lehigh Valley while staying family owned, not corporate, and always putting the customer first.

At the end of the day, I am not trying to build just another plumbing company. I am trying to build something that lasts, something my family can be proud of, and something people know they can trust when it actually matters.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The biggest challenge early on was taking the risk. Walking away from a stable six figure job with benefits and a pension was not easy, especially with a family depending on me. There was a lot of pressure and no guarantees that it was going to work.

In the beginning, it was nonstop. I was working nights in Manhattan and running my business during the day, easily putting in 70 plus hours a week. There were days I was completely exhausted, but if a call came in, I went. There was no backup plan.

As the business started growing, the challenges changed. It went from just doing the work to managing people. Finding good employees has been one of the toughest parts. You can invest time into someone, train them, build a relationship with them, go above and beyond to help them succeed, and then one day they just do not show up because a large company offered them a couple dollars more an hour. That was a hard reality to learn. Loyalty is not always guaranteed, and you have to build systems that do not rely on any one person.

There were also financial pressures. Investing into trucks, tools, inventory, marketing, and payroll while still trying to grow takes a lot. On top of that, losing the safety net of benefits and paying for things like health insurance on your own is a big adjustment.

Another challenge has been maintaining quality as we grow. It is easy to do things right when it is just you, but as you bring on more people, you have to make sure your standards do not drop. That is something I take very seriously.

Overall, every stage has had its own obstacles. But I have always believed you either figure it out or you do not make it. There really is no in between.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Plumbing Pros LLC is a residential service plumbing company based out of Easton, PA, serving the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas. We handle everything from small repairs to full system replacements, but what really sets us apart is how we approach the job and the customer.

We are known for doing things the right way. Clean work, code compliant, and something we are proud to stand behind. I have never failed a plumbing inspection in my 14 year career, and that standard carries over to every technician on our team. We train our guys to take pride in their work and treat every home like it is their own.

What really separates us is the customer experience. We do not believe in pressure or shortcuts. We take the time to explain what is going on, give real options, and make sure the customer feels comfortable. We treat people like family, and that has led to over 2,000 customers served and more than 575 five star reviews on Google.

From a branding standpoint, one thing I am really proud of is how we positioned the company. We built a superhero themed brand around “The Plumbing Pro” with the slogan “The Shield Your Home Deserves.” It stands out, it is memorable, and it represents what we do, protect people’s homes and give them peace of mind.

We have grown from a one man operation into a multi million dollar company with 11 employees and 5 vehicles, and we are continuing to expand. Based on customer demand, we have also launched HVAC Pros as a sister company so we can provide both plumbing and HVAC services at a high level.

At the end of the day, we are not trying to be the cheapest option. We are trying to be the most trusted. We want customers to know that when they call us, the job will be done right, their home will be respected, and they will be taken care of.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I would say the most important quality to my success is accountability.

At the end of the day, I have always believed that no one is coming to solve your problems for you. If something goes wrong, you own it. If something needs to get done, you step up and make it happen. That mindset has carried me from working in the field to building a business.

There were times I was working 70 plus hours a week, exhausted, but still answering the phone and showing up because there was no other option. That level of accountability builds consistency, and consistency is what creates results over time.

It also applies to how we run the company. We take accountability for our work, for our customers, and for our team. If we make a mistake, we fix it. If a customer calls, we show up. That is how you build trust, and trust is what everything is built on.

To me, success is not about one big moment. It is about doing the right thing over and over again, even when it is not easy.
