Exploring Life & Business with Joy Washington of Doula With Joy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Washington.

Hi Joy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a State Certified Perinatal Doula and PA Medicaid Doula whose calling grew from a deep commitment to supporting women, birthing people, and families through one of the most transformative seasons of their lives. My journey into birth work wasn’t accidental — it was rooted in compassion, curiosity, and a desire to make a meaningful impact in maternal health, especially for communities that have historically been underserved. My path was/is intentional: studying childbirth and postpartum education, earning multiple certifications, and grounding my practice in holistic and humanistic care. I believe birth is more than a medical event — it’s a physical, emotional, and spiritual transition that deserves presence, respect, and unwavering support. I’ve aligned myself with initiatives like PatientsRWaiting’s Diversified Doula Initiative to help diversify the doula workforce and improve outcomes for families who need culturally responsive care. I show up with calm, clarity, and cultural humility, creating safe spaces where families feel seen, heard, and empowered. support families across Harrisburg with evidence-based guidance, emotional steadiness, and a nurturing spirit. My work honors autonomy, uplifts personal choices, and centers the whole person — mind, body, and spirit. Every birth I attend, every postpartum home I enter, reflects my commitment to helping families transition with confidence, dignity, and joy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I work within a healthcare system where doulas may still be misunderstood or undervalued.
Hospitals vary in how they welcome doulas, and some clinical teams may not fully understand my role, requiring me to constantly advocate for your place in the room. I walk a delicate line:
Supporting client autonomy while respecting clinical boundaries. Birth work is emotionally heavy.
I hold space for trauma, fear, loss, and uncertainty — while staying grounded, calm, and supportive.
This emotional load can be draining without strong boundaries and self-care.Being on-call 24/7 means:
Interrupted sleep Missed family events Sudden schedule changes Physical exhaustion from long labors
It’s a beautiful calling, but it demands sacrifice. I’m not just a doula — I’m a business owner. I manage Documentation Billing Medicaid credentialing CAQH updates Marketing Client communication Scheduling

Running a doula practice requires administrative discipline that many people don’t see.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
