Exploring Life & Business with Gianna of GH Accounting Tax Services LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gianna.

Hi Gianna , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is one of resilience, growth, and turning life’s challenges into a purpose to help others succeed. From growing up on a farm in Puerto Rico to building a life in North Philadelphia, becoming a mother, overcoming personal loss, and eventually becoming an entrepreneur, every chapter of my life has taught me something that I now bring into my business and my community.

I was born and raised with my dad and my sister on a farm in Añasco, Puerto Rico, where I grew up in a strict household that taught me discipline, responsibility, respect, and the importance of hard work. In 1985, I moved to Philadelphia with my grandparents and settled in North Philadelphia. It was a completely different world for me—a new language, a new environment, and many challenges—but those experiences helped shape the person I am today.

One of my first opportunities was working at City Blue. That is where I learned to speak English while also learning cashiering, inventory management, and financial tracking. As I moved through different jobs, I realized that no matter what position I held, I always found myself drawn to the numbers.

While attending school for accounting, I worked part-time managing the bookkeeping and inventory for three bars, along with training and hiring employees. I later became a Billing Manager for a medical practice, which gave me additional experience in financial operations and business management. Over the years, I continued learning and working closely with CPAs while developing my experience in bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, QuickBooks, and financial reporting.

After years in the corporate world, I realized I wanted to bring the knowledge I had gained back to my community. In 2017, I started building GH Accounting & Tax Services. Today, I am a Certified Bookkeeper, Certified Tax Professional, certified in Payroll, and QuickBooks ProAdvisor, with more than 15 years of hands-on experience.

My journey has also been deeply shaped by being a mother. I am the mother of four children—three daughters and one son. Tragically, I lost my son to violence. Experiencing that loss while knowing my family still depended on me taught me a level of strength and perseverance I never knew I had. My family continues to be one of the biggest reasons I keep moving forward.

Today, my passion is helping business owners understand their finances—not simply handing them financial reports. I want them to understand their Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow so they can prepare for taxes, create budgets, pursue loans and grants, invest in their businesses, and begin building long-term and generational wealth.

I also stay involved in my community and mentor young women interested in accounting and finance. I believe the knowledge I have gained through my education, career, business, and life experiences should be shared with others.

I am still growing, too. That is one of the most meaningful parts of this journey: as I help my clients, young women, and my community grow, I am growing right alongside them.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road has been anything but smooth—but some of the hardest moments of my life are also the moments that taught me how strong I could become. I have learned that strength isn’t about having an easy journey; it’s about finding a way forward when life gives you every reason to stop.

Coming from Puerto Rico to North Philadelphia as a young girl was a major adjustment. I had to learn a new language, adapt to a completely different environment, and find my way while growing up around many of the challenges that affected the community at that time. Being raised in a strict household taught me discipline and responsibility, but life taught me how to become independent, think differently, and find solutions when things did not go as planned.

I also had to balance being a mother, working, going to school for accounting, and building my career. There were times when giving up would have been easier, but I knew my family depended on me.

The most difficult challenge of my life was losing my son to violence. There are some experiences that change you forever, and that was one of them. I still had three daughters, a family, responsibilities, and a future that needed me, so I had to find the strength to continue even while carrying that loss.

Starting my own business brought another set of challenges. I had to transition from being an accounting professional to becoming a business owner—learning how to build a brand, find clients, earn trust, continue my education, and grow while still taking care of my family and serving my community.

But every challenge has taught me something. I learned that you can go through difficult seasons and still build something meaningful. I don’t look at my struggles as the end of my story; they are part of what shaped my way of thinking, my determination, and my desire to help others.

Today, when I sit across from a business owner who feels overwhelmed or unsure of their next step, I understand what it feels like to face uncertainty. That is why my work is personal to me. I want people to know that growth doesn’t always come from a perfect path. Sometimes it comes from learning, adapting, staying strong, and continuing to move forward.

We’ve been impressed with GH Accounting Tax Services LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GH Accounting & Tax Services was built on a simple belief: business owners shouldn’t just receive financial reports—they should understand what those numbers mean and how to use them to build their future.

We specialize in bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, QuickBooks advisory, financial reporting, cleanup and reconciliation, and small-business financial guidance. We help business owners understand their Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow so they can see where their business stands financially and make more informed decisions.

What sets us apart is the education and personal attention behind the numbers. I don’t want to simply hand a client a report and say, “Here are your numbers.” I want to sit with them, walk them through those numbers, and help them understand how their financial information can prepare them for taxes, budgeting, loans, grants, investments, and future growth.

As a bilingual business, we provide services in English and Spanish, which is especially important to me. I want financial knowledge to be accessible to entrepreneurs in my community who may have previously felt intimidated by accounting or faced language barriers.

I am most proud that GH Accounting & Tax Services has become a brand centered around trust, education, community, and growth. We work closely with small businesses and collaborate with CPAs and other professionals when needed, giving our clients support as their businesses evolve.

Our mission goes beyond accounting. I want entrepreneurs to move from simply running a business to truly understanding their business—building stronger financial foundations, preparing themselves for opportunities, investing wisely, and ultimately working toward long-term and generational wealth.

I also believe growth should be shared. Through community involvement and mentoring young women interested in accounting and finance, I try to pass along the knowledge and opportunities that helped me build my own career.

GH Accounting & Tax Services is growing alongside the businesses and communities we serve. Their growth is part of our growth, and that is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe life gives us both good and bad circumstances, but what we do with them is what shapes our journey. I’ve experienced moments that felt like good luck and others that I would never wish on anyone, but each one has played a role in making me who I am today.

Coming from Puerto Rico to Philadelphia gave me opportunities I could not have imagined as a young girl growing up on a farm. Along the way, I was fortunate to meet people who gave me opportunities, taught me something, believed in me, or opened a door. From learning English while working at City Blue to discovering my connection with numbers, going to school for accounting, working in different financial roles, and eventually starting my own business, every experience became another piece of my journey.

But there has also been what some might call bad luck—personal struggles, financial challenges, difficult environments, doors that closed, and the devastating loss of my son to violence. Those experiences taught me that I could not control everything that happened in my life, but I could control what I did next.

In business, I feel the same way. Sometimes the right client, connection, mentor, or opportunity comes at exactly the right time. I am grateful for those moments, but I also believe you have to be prepared when the opportunity arrives. Luck may open a door, but your preparation, work ethic, relationships, and willingness to keep learning determine what you do once that door opens.

Today, I try to create some of those opportunities for others. Whether I am helping a small-business owner understand their finances, connecting someone with resources, participating in community events, or mentoring a young woman in finance, I want to be one of those people who helps open a door for someone else.

I am grateful for every opportunity I have received, but I am equally grateful for the lessons that came from the difficult moments. Both have shaped my journey, and both remind me never to take an opportunity—or the chance to help someone else—for granted.
