Exploring Life & Business with Emma Carpenter of Better Connections Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Carpenter.

Hi Emma, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Better Connections Therapy because I wanted to create a practice focused on helping individuals, couples, and families feel more connected to themselves, their values, their relationships, and the world they live in. As a Marriage & Family Therapist I strongly believe that many of the struggles we face today are rooted in loss of connection.

It shows up everywhere: couples who’ve stopped really talking to each other, people who look like they have it all together but feel empty inside, families repeating patterns nobody actually wants to repeat. As a late-diagnosed ADHD’er who’s worked through my own CPTSD and insecure attachment, I understand what it’s like to feel disconnected from yourself while still trying to show up for everyone else. That’s shaped how I practice: I use EMDR, attachment theory, and the Gottman Method not just because they’re research-backed, but because they actually get to the roots of why people feel stuck, so they can feel connected again in ways that actually last.

While the practice is currently just me, I also wanted to create a space for therapists to practice where they felt connected to each other and to a community of providers who can support and uplift them. I’m looking forward to adding a new intern next year and hopefully one or two therapists who are as passionate about the Better Connections mission as I am.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not entirely, but I don’t think the hard parts were wasted. Getting licensed took longer than I expected due to some red tape with the state board, and after many happy years at another practice I found myself in a work environment that no longer reflected the kind of care and integrity I wanted to build my career around. Walking away from that was one of the harder professional decisions I’ve made, but it’s also exactly why Better Connections exists and looks the way it does today: I built it to be everything I felt was missing in my own experience as both a therapist and a client of the system.

We’ve been impressed with Better Connections Therapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Better Connections Therapy is a Philadelphia-based practice offering therapy for individuals, couples, and families, both in person at our Northern Liberties office and virtually throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I specialize in couples work, trauma, ADHD, and life transitions, and I’m trained in approaches like the Gottman Method, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems.

Couples work is what I love most. I work a lot with millennial and modern couples navigating things like relational stress, infidelity recovery, and the drift from partners into “roommates.” I’m also trained in sex therapy and sexology, and I offer an affirming space for LGBTQ+ clients and those exploring consensual non-monogamy, so nothing is off the table in session. On the individual side, I work with a lot of people managing ADHD, burnout, and complex trauma, often people who look like they have it all together but are quietly exhausted underneath.

What sets me apart is that I don’t do therapy that’s just open-ended conversation. Everything I use is research-backed and built to create actual change, not just insight. I also try to make therapy feel human: sessions are warm, sometimes funny, and genuinely judgment-free. Bring your iced coffee, wear your sweats, whatever makes it feel less clinical and more like a real conversation. I think that accessibility matters just as much as the clinical training behind it.

What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is that Better Connections isn’t built around a generic therapy model. It’s built around the idea that people don’t need to just manage their symptoms, they can actually rebuild the connections in their lives, to themselves, their partners, their families, and their environment. That’s the throughline in everything I offer, from EMDR-based trauma work to Gottman-informed couples therapy to walk-and-talk eco-therapy sessions in local parks.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
