Exploring Life & Business with Dru Bleem of Dru Bleem Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dru Bleem.

Dru, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My professional journey started in criminal justice, where I earned my bachelor’s degree and began working as a case manager. Much of my early work was with individuals who had intellectual disabilities, including those involved in the criminal justice system. While I found the work meaningful, I realized there were limited opportunities for growth in that role, which led me to return to school and earn my master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked in a variety of settings, including supporting individuals with disabilities, serving as a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist in a women’s correctional facility, and providing counseling in community-based settings. Each experience helped shape my understanding of human behavior, resilience, and the importance of meeting people where they are.

Eventually, I opened my private practice, where I found my true passion. I have always felt especially drawn to working with women who have experienced domestic violence, emotional abuse, narcissistic relationships, or other unhealthy relationship dynamics. Helping clients rebuild their confidence, trust themselves again, and create healthier futures is some of the most rewarding work I do. While that remains a primary focus of my practice, I also work with individuals facing a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, self-esteem issues, grief, and life transitions.

Looking back, every step of my journey has contributed to the counselor I am today, and I feel fortunate to do work that I genuinely love.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was earning my master’s degree while raising a family. I actually had both of my children during graduate school, so balancing pregnancy, newborns, coursework, internships, and family responsibilities required a great deal of perseverance, flexibility, and determination.

Another significant challenge came when I opened my private practice. Shortly after launching, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the landscape of mental health care almost overnight. Like many business owners, I had to adapt quickly. I added telehealth services to my practice, which allowed me to continue serving clients during that time and expand my reach across Pennsylvania. While I still provide in-person counseling today, incorporating virtual services helped my practice grow and ensured clients could continue accessing care when they needed it most.

Looking back, those challenges taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of finding creative solutions when circumstances don’t go as planned.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dru Bleem Counseling?
At Dru Bleem Counseling, my goal is to provide a space where clients feel genuinely seen, heard, and understood. I work with adolescents and adults facing a variety of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, grief, self-esteem concerns, life transitions, and relationship difficulties.

While I treat a wide range of concerns, I am especially known for my work with women who have experienced domestic violence, emotional abuse, narcissistic relationships, and other unhealthy relationship dynamics. What sets me apart is not only my professional training and experience, but also my personal understanding of the complex emotions that often accompany these experiences. I understand how difficult it can be to leave unhealthy situations, rebuild confidence, trust your instincts again, and navigate the grief that often comes with major life changes. That perspective allows me to connect with clients in a way that is both compassionate and practical.

My approach is warm, authentic, and down-to-earth. I strive to create an environment where clients don’t feel judged or analyzed, but instead feel supported, empowered, and encouraged to make meaningful changes at their own pace.

What I’m most proud of brand-wise is that Dru Bleem Counseling has become known as a place where people can show up exactly as they are. My clients often tell me they appreciate that I am genuine, relatable, and transparent. My goal has never been to build the biggest practice,it’s been to build a practice where people feel safe enough to heal, grow, and rediscover their own strength.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think the mental health field will continue to grow significantly over the next 5–10 years. One of the biggest shifts we’ve already seen is the reduction of stigma surrounding mental health, and I believe that trend will continue as more people become comfortable seeking support and talking openly about their struggles.

I also think technology will continue to shape the industry. Telehealth has become a permanent part of mental health care, increasing access for individuals who may not otherwise be able to attend therapy due to location, transportation, work schedules, or physical limitations. At the same time, we’re seeing the emergence of artificial intelligence and digital mental health tools, which may help provide education, resources, and support between sessions.

That said, I don’t believe technology will ever replace the value of a genuine therapeutic relationship. Human connection, empathy, and feeling truly understood are at the core of effective therapy and will remain essential regardless of technological advances.

For my practice specifically, I anticipate continued growth in the need for services related to anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, emotional abuse, and narcissistic abuse recovery. More people are recognizing unhealthy relationship patterns and seeking support to heal from them. I also expect to see an increased demand for specialized services for adolescents, women navigating major life transitions, and individuals looking for a more personalized and authentic therapy experience rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Another trend I anticipate is a greater focus on holistic wellness. More clients are recognizing the connection between mental health, physical health, nutrition, sleep, movement, and overall lifestyle. As a Certified Mental Health & Nutrition Specialist, I am particularly excited to see more conversations around the relationship between mental and physical well-being and how those factors influence one another.

Overall, I see the future of mental health care becoming more accessible, more personalized, and more widely accepted as an important part of overall health and well-being.
