Exploring Life & Business with Amber Dugan of Balloons en Bloom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Dugan.

Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into balloon décor began with a very personal celebration, my daughter’s first birthday. I have always been creative and naturally drawn to artistic outlets, but balloons weren’t something I ever imagined would become a career.

My husband and I had a long, difficult road to becoming parents, including infertility, IVF, and a difficult pregnancy with many complications. When it came time to plan our daughter’s first birthday, I knew I wanted to make the celebration extra special. It felt like more than a birthday, it was a celebration of everything we had gone through to get to her. That was when I first started working with balloons and discovered how much I loved the creative process of transforming a space.

After her birthday, I began creating balloon décor here and there for family and friends. For quite a while, people kept encouraging me to turn my creativity into a business and telling me, “This is what you should be doing.” It took me some time to truly listen and believe I could make a career out of it, but eventually I decided to go all in—and the rest is history.

Today, one of my favorite parts of owning Balloons en Bloom is getting to play a small role in some of the biggest moments in my clients’ lives. From first birthdays and baby showers to milestone celebrations and once-in-a-lifetime events, I love creating something that makes those memories feel even more special.

I also really enjoy the corporate side of what I do. Balloon décor has evolved far beyond traditional party balloons. Custom installations can completely transform a space, elevate an event, reinforce a brand, and create a polished, professional atmosphere. Whether I’m designing for a family celebration, grand opening, nonprofit event, or large corporate gathering, I love taking a client’s vision and turning it into something memorable.

What started as a way to make my daughter’s first birthday extra special ultimately helped me discover a creative career that I genuinely love.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any small business owner, there have definitely been challenges along the way. There has been a huge learning curve in turning something creative that I love into an actual business. Creating the décor is only one part of what I do. Behind every installation are hours of planning, sourcing materials, communicating with clients, creating proposals, marketing, bookkeeping, logistics, and problem-solving. Learning how to balance the creative side with the business side has probably been one of my biggest challenges, and one of the areas where I’ve grown the most.

Building a name for yourself also takes time. I’ve learned that growth doesn’t happen overnight. It comes from consistently showing up, doing quality work, making connections within the community, and building genuine relationships with clients and other local businesses. I try to treat every event—whether it’s an intimate family celebration or a large corporate installation—with the same level of care and professionalism.

Looking back, many of those challenges have actually helped shape Balloons en Bloom into the business it is today. They’ve pushed me creatively and professionally and made each milestone along the way that much more meaningful.

As you know, we’re big fans of Balloons en Bloom. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Balloons en Bloom specializes in custom balloon décor and event styling for both private celebrations and corporate events. We create everything from organic balloon garlands, arches and columns to custom backdrops, photo-op installations, helium arrangements, and branded corporate designs. Our goal is always to create something that feels intentional, polished, and tailored specifically to the event.

I think what we have become known for is our elevated, modern approach to balloon décor and our attention to detail. I love creating designs that complement the overall aesthetic of an event rather than simply adding balloons to a space. Color selection, scale, placement, and the surrounding environment all play a part in the final design. Whether it’s a child’s first birthday, a baby or bridal shower, a milestone celebration, grand opening, or corporate event, I want the décor to feel cohesive and thoughtfully designed.

I especially enjoy creating statement pieces and photo-op areas that transform a space and give guests something memorable to experience. On the corporate side, I love incorporating a company’s colors, branding, and logos into custom installations that make an event feel polished while also creating an opportunity for organic marketing. A well-designed, branded photo-op naturally encourages guests to take photos, share them on social media, and engage with the company’s brand in a fun and memorable way. The décor becomes more than something beautiful in the room; it can become part of the event’s marketing and overall guest experience.

What I’m most proud of is the reputation and relationships we are continuing to build throughout Lancaster County and Central Pennsylvania. It means so much when a client trusts me with an important milestone, but it’s equally rewarding when a local business or organization chooses Balloons en Bloom to represent their brand at an event. Seeing clients return or recommend us to someone else is one of the greatest compliments I can receive.

What sets Balloons en Bloom apart is the level of care and attention to detail that goes into each project. I really listen to what the client is envisioning and then use my creativity and experience to bring that vision to life in a way that feels polished, personal, and special to their event. At the end of the day, I’m not just creating balloon décor—I’m helping create the backdrop for memories, celebrations, and moments that people will look back on for years to come.

What does success mean to you?
For me, success is building something that I’m genuinely proud of while doing work that I truly enjoy.

Success is having clients trust me with some of the most important moments in their lives and seeing their reaction when they walk into a space I’ve helped transform. It’s building relationships within my community, having clients come back for another celebration, and being recommended to their friends, family, or colleagues. Those things mean so much to me because they tell me that I’m not only creating something beautiful, but also providing an experience people value.
