Exploring Life & Business with Abrar Al-Shaer of Precision Women’s Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abrar Al-Shaer.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From a young age, I was fascinated by natural remedies and the healing power of food. I collected every botanical medicine book I could find and felt deeply connected to the wisdom of nature. That passion became even more meaningful when my grandmother shared that her own grandmother had served as the herbalist in her village, helping women understand their bodies and take greater ownership of their health. Her story planted a seed that would eventually grow into my life’s calling. After several years of studying herbal and botanical medicine, I pursued a doctorate in nutrition to build a deeper scientific and clinical foundation. For more than eight years, I immersed myself in nutritional biochemistry, immunology, medical nutrition therapy, clinical care, and research.

As a scientist, I led and published clinical studies exploring the complex relationship between nutrition and the immune system. During my doctoral training, I also completed clinical training in an OB-GYN setting, where I witnessed how deeply nutrition can influence women’s health throughout fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond. These experiences taught me that women’s symptoms cannot be understood by looking at isolated body parts. Meaningful care requires us to consider the whole person, including how their organ systems, nutrition, hormones, stress, environment, lifestyle, and lived experiences interact. My understanding of integrative healing became even more personal when, after completing this intensive journey, my own health began to decline. I was diagnosed with chronic idiopathic urticaria, a condition with no identifiable cause or straightforward treatment. Experiencing the limitations of the healthcare system firsthand was deeply humbling. I began applying the same integrative principles I had spent years studying and teaching, and through that process, I was able to restore my health. It reaffirmed my belief that women’s bodies hold tremendous wisdom and capacity to heal when given the right tools and support.

These experiences ultimately inspired me to establish Precision Women’s Care, a women’s health clinic where women can receive thoughtful, highly individualized natural and integrative care. As its founder and owner, I created the kind of practice I wished more women had access to, one where clinicians look beyond symptoms, understand the full picture, and provide precise, evidence-based support tailored to each woman’s needs.

My mission is to help women reconnect with their bodies, feel empowered in their care, and create lasting health through a truly holistic approach.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. The first two to three years of building Precision Women’s Care were especially difficult. I did not pay myself a salary during that time. Every dollar the I or the practice earned went directly back into the business, along with a significant portion of my personal savings. Once I began hiring, my priority was making sure everyone on the team was paid, and little to nothing remained for myself or the business. That sacrifice was meaningful and ultimately rewarding, but it was also exhausting to live with the uncertainty of not knowing when the practice would finally break even.

Another major challenge was building the right team. In the beginning, I learned that sharing skills or experience does not necessarily mean sharing the same mission. I invested thousands of hours into training people who, in the end, were not as aligned with the vision of the practice as I had hoped. When those professional relationships did not work out, it was difficult to watch so much time, energy, and trust disappear with them.

Those experiences taught me to be much more intentional about whom I invite into this work. I realized that I needed people who viewed caring for women as more than simply a job. I needed people who were deeply committed to serving women, growing together, and helping expand access to compassionate, high quality care. I am incredibly grateful that I now have a team that stands shoulder to shoulder with me in that mission. Reaching this point has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey, but the road to finding those people was not easy.

Building a practice that can grow and serve more women has also meant navigating the realities of insurance. We have faced delayed reimbursements, denied claims, reduced payments, and months of waiting for money the practice was already owed. At times, we have accepted financial losses in order to keep our doors open to women with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Aetna coverage. We do not immediately pass those burdens on to our patients simply because their insurance company has failed to pay. Instead, we continue pursuing the insurer for as long as possible, often for months.

There have been many moments of financial uncertainty, difficult lessons, and personal sacrifice. Still, every challenge has strengthened my leadership, clarified the kind of practice I wanted to build, and deepened my commitment to making thoughtful, integrative women’s healthcare more accessible.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Precision Women’s Care?
Precision Women’s Care is a women’s health clinic dedicated to guiding women through their most difficult and complex symptoms, whether they are facing one concern or twenty, so they can finally understand what is happening in their bodies and why. We are a team of registered dietitians and herbalists specializing in integrative nutrition and herbal medicine for women’s health.

We provide highly individualized care for concerns such as painful periods, PMS and PMDD, PCOS and PMOS, endometriosis, irregular cycles, fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, and much more.

What sets us apart is that we do not look at symptoms in isolation. We consider every organ system and how each one interacts with nutrition, blood sugar balance, digestion, inflammation, nutrient status, stress, sleep, hormones, environment, lifestyle, and lived experiences. Our goal is not to give women another generic plan or simply tell them what to eat. We work to understand the patterns beneath their symptoms and create precise, practical support that reflects their unique body, health history, and stage of life.

We are also known for translating complex science into guidance women can actually understand and apply. Many of our patients come to us after years of feeling dismissed, overwhelmed, or confused by conflicting information. We take the time to educate them, help them make sense of their symptoms, and give them a meaningful role in their own care.

Our team centered approach is a fundamental part of what we do. We collaborate closely on every case and spend multiple hours each week reviewing and discussing our patients together. This allows us to challenge one another, consider every possible angle, and make sure no important detail is overlooked. Every woman benefits not only from the knowledge of one clinician, but from the collective insight of an entire team committed to helping her move forward.

I am most proud that we have created a practice where science and traditional healing wisdom can exist together. We respect research and clinical evidence while also recognizing the value of herbal medicine, whole person care, and the body’s capacity to heal.

More than anything, I want women to know that they do not have to accept feeling dismissed, confused, or disconnected from their bodies. Precision Women’s Care was created to give women the depth of care, clarity, and support they have often spent years searching for.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My biggest advice is to intentionally place yourself in rooms where the people you admire and want to learn from are already gathering. For me, that has meant attending conferences, herbal medicine retreats, clinical intensives, and other events centered around integrative and women’s health.

Those spaces have allowed me to connect with practitioners who share similar values, challenge the way I think, and understand the kind of work I want to build. Some of my most meaningful professional relationships and mentorship opportunities have come from simply showing up, starting conversations, and staying connected afterward.

I would encourage people to travel when they can, attend the events that genuinely excite them, and go find their people. Networking feels much more natural when you are surrounded by others who care deeply about the same work you do.
