Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Stevenson.
Hi Ryan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The concept started in 2017 when I painted our window shutters. A couple of neighbors stopped by and asked to have their shutters painted. I began to think maybe other folks would like to have their shutters updated with some painting. While driving around the area, I noticed many homes with faded or missing shutters. While describing the idea of a shutter painting business with a colleague of mine he said “Shutter the Thought” and we agreed that would be an excellent name for the new business. Since that time we expanded the shutter business into a handyman and remodeling business. We decided to do the expansion from the all the requests of our shutter clients. Many of our clients had lists of projects around their homes that needed completed. We have built multiple decks, remodeled several kitchens and bathrooms. We’ve finished a few basements and added on extra rooms outside the home’s foundation. Our clients tell us that knowing one company will complete their entire project is peace of mind. They also like having one point of contact during the project. A majority of our clients are repeat clients. Our ability to do small projects like a faucet or ceiling fan install is very appealing. We keep our overhead costs low so our quotes fit most people’s budget and are inline with their idea of what their project should cost. We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the beginning I operated a one man show painting, repairing, rehanging, or replacing shutters. After getting more and more requests to do other projects, it became clear that I was going to need help. The struggle these days is finding young tradesman who can work for a reasonable hourly rate. Because our work can be speratic at times, pay periods can be too. Making budgeting income challenging. I’ve been on the lookout for a foreman to take my place in the field doing physical work. At my age it’s time to go back to the office so my battle wounds can retire.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I graduated from trade school with a degree in architectural drafting and design. I spent a decade drawing and designing displays, jewelry cases, changing rooms, and wall systems for the retail industry. One of the capabilities I bring to the table for our clients is the ability to provide working drawings to obtain building permits. I have spent a lifetime creating a custom home plan that I have named ‘Eagles Wing Estate’. This home will abstractly give people the thought that they are looking at an eagle in flight.
I have a poem in the book ‘America at the Millennium ‘ that has a place in the National Library of Congress.
I am currently working with a company on an invention that looks very promising.
I am also working on a novel called ‘The Last Soul.’
It’s a toss up between the poem and the invention as to what I am most proud.
What sets me apart from others is my determination.
