Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Hallowell.
Melissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I come From a family of architects, engineers and builders, so i have always been around the process. I just had to find a way to merge my love for fine art with my a profession that allows me to create spaces. So the obvious was interior design.
I went To Moore college of art and design for and acquired a BFA in interior design with a minor in furniture design and art history.
I worked for some amazing high-end design firms in New Jersey right out of college, but once I had My daughter I just wanted more time with her, to be a mom and designer on my terms and with my own style.
So i decided to start my own business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t Think anyone gets a smooth road especially starting a business lol. Timing was crazy, one day I had woke up tired of missing my daughter, tired of dealing with my financial stability relying on someone else’s choices, tired of putting all my creative effort into someone’s firm to get put down and not supported, tired of of being in a bad abusive relationship at home
I had gotten let go from the last firm I worked at for taking an emergency medical appointment, i was just disgusted and it created a spiral in my life…I let go of EVERYTHING, Just walked away. I just packed up my home put it on the market and left my fiancé, and took My daughter who was 5 at the time home to my family farm in bucks county and just started over.
The process of healing after an abusive relationship at home and at work had to happen! All while being a single mother that has to provide.
I began consulting for kitchen design showrooms and designing for flippers & investors…. the business began to grow through word of mouth and with the help of some great mentors, Kevin Bliss of Bella marble & Kevin Mair of Tile Gallery
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are a full service design firm, we specialize in residential design but we also do small businesses like bakeries, restaurants etc
We have done projects across the US and consulted on work in Mexico City, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica & Italy.
People don’t come to us because we specialize in a certain style, they come to us because we take the time to listen to our clients and create spaces that reflect them. Wether it’s a historical preservation project or a modern inspired home renovation we can assist with it.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
They can visit us mdhdesignsllc.com and read more about us. They can also schedule a consultation on our site.
They can always support us by sharing our business with family members or friends that are in need of some type of design work from a new kitchen or living space to adding on to their home
