Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
They say it takes 10 years to become an overnight success and I have been doing it longer than that lol. So in other people yes it may have come off smoothly but in this business perception is reality. I have worked harder than I knew I could. And have been blessed more than I thought I deserved. For me the best part of this journey have been the reactions promised by practice. The awards promised by consistency and the understanding of the difference between Popularity and Success. So to answer your question directly, it’s been smooth like chunky peanut butter but I can promise it is the best pb&j you’ve ever tasted. lol I guess you can say that’s what success taste like.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Some may consider me the most famous rapper you’ve never heard of before. I am proud of the resume I’ve built and it’s so hard to pick a favorite. Being called up by WQED/PBS to personally celebrate Mr. Rogers 50 year anniversary was such an honor and for a Pittsburgh boy a dream come true. Once they gave me the green light to remix his song now entitled “It’s a Beautiful Day” I jumped at the chance to celebrate history. Not knowing we were about to make history of our own. The song and performance won a Emmy Award making me the 3rd rapper in history to ever win a Emmy Award. Out of everything I’ve done that sits in my heart. I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing people and I am so grateful that who I’ve become makes people want to work next to me.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is connecting with people. Sharing experiences and stories, making everyone feel seen and heard. Lifting up and acknowledge their humanity and purpose. Treating them how I would like to be treated but also proving to them that happiness and love and respect is not transactional. Putting kindness into the world on purpose. Using my power and voice to make people more powerful. I am just trying to teach everyone that they are born a star but deserve to be called a sun.
