Daily Inspiration: Meet Chuck Ondo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck Ondo.

Hi Chuck, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Chuck Ondo is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served from 1984 to 1989, before a decade-long career as a Pennsylvania State Trooper—working undercover and as a SERT sniper. After leaving law enforcement, he became a barber and eventually opened Valor Men’s Grooming, a barbershop built on faith and community. In 2024, he co-founded the Semper Fi Mission, a nonprofit focused on prison ministry, homeless outreach, and supporting veterans. Through all of these roles, Chuck’s mission remains the same: serving others with purpose and heart.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Chuck Ondo’s journey has been marked by both service and personal trials. After his time as a U.S. Marine and then as a Pennsylvania State Trooper, he faced a profound struggle: while working undercover, he fell into the same lifestyle he sought to protect others from. This led to a battle with addiction, eventually resulting in incarceration. However, through treatment and his faith in God, Chuck achieved sobriety four years ago. These struggles have ignited his passion for helping others, leading him to open Valor Men’s Grooming and co-found the Semper Fi Mission, where he now dedicates his life to serving veterans, the incarcerated, and the community.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Through barbering, I began connecting with homeless veterans—picking them up, bringing them to my private suite, and offering not only haircuts but hope. These one-on-one conversations about God and recovery soon evolved into “PrayerCuts”—a monthly outreach where our team of barbers provides haircuts, meals, clothing, and prayer to those in need. We’ve taken people from the barber chair to detox and even helped establish Cornerstone House, a recovery home for veterans. For me, the artistry of barbering is really a gateway to transforming lives.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love about Pittsburgh is the people. It’s a blue-collar city with a kind, hardworking spirit. I often think of Pittsburgh as the gateway to the Midwest—genuine, welcoming, and down-to-earth. After years policing in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh felt like home. My dad was a steelworker here, and the city’s history, coupled with our amazing teams—the Steelers, the Pirates, the Penguins—just makes it an incredible place to live and raise a family.
