Today we’d like to introduce you to Amina Brown.
Hi Amina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first started dancing at the age of five, but I stopped shortly after. Although I continued dancing with my sister and learning routines my mother created for my cousins and me, I wasn’t formally reintroduced to dance until I was 12 years old. In many ways, I felt like I was starting late, which made me the underdog when I began my journey. I attended a performing arts high school with only two years of formal dance training under my belt, while many of my classmates had several years of experience. Despite this, I was incredibly passionate and dedicated to improving my craft. I worked tirelessly to develop my skills, push beyond my limitations, and prove to myself that I belonged.
Along the way, I discovered another passion: creating. What started as a desire to become a better dancer evolved into my own unique choreographic vision and creative identity, MeanChoreo. By the time I graduated, I had grown into a soloist and was frequently featured in performances and shows. My journey taught me that where you start does not determine how far you can go. Through my dedication, perseverance, and love for the art form, I developed into the artist I am today: Amina Nefertari.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has not been an easy one. Choosing a career in one of the most competitive and, at times, toxic industries requires resilience, determination, and an unwavering belief in yourself. Throughout my journey, I’ve struggled with self-confidence, financial stability, projection from others, and even a lack of support from family and friends. Choosing to pursue a career as an artist is not an easy decision, especially when the path is often uncertain and requires so much sacrifice.
However, despite the challenges, I wouldn’t trade this journey for the world. Every setback, disappointment, and obstacle has taught me valuable lessons, strengthened my character, and contributed to the artist I am today. Looking back, I recognize that each challenge was a stepping stone that helped shape my artistry, deepen my passion, and bring me closer to the person I am becoming.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional dancer, choreographer, and creative director specializing in background performance for films, commercials, music videos, and live performances alongside musical artists. I also participate in dance competitions and showcases that celebrate and promote the arts. Beyond performing, I focus on choreography and creative direction, developing dynamic concepts and compelling movement experiences for artists and large audiences. My work has been featured at notable events, including Roots Picnic and the FIFA Fan Festival. I am known for my powerful performance quality, dynamic choreographic compositions, and ability to bring creative visions to life.
What I am most proud of, however, is the impact I have made on Philadelphia’s youth dance community. Beyond my accomplishments as a performer and creative, I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of artists and creating opportunities for young dancers to grow, develop, and recognize their own potential. What sets me apart is my raw talent, authentic aura, distinctive creative perspective, and undeniable presence—not only as a performer but as an artist with a vision, a purpose, and a story that I bring into every room I enter.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The advice I would give is to walk into every room as your authentic self and trust that the people who are meant to find you will. Network, build relationships, and connect with as many people as possible because you never know who someone knows, what opportunities they may be able to introduce you to, or what value you may bring to their lives and careers. Authenticity creates space for genuine connections with people whose values, vision, and purpose align with yours.
I also encourage finding a mentor whose journey closely resembles your own. Learn from their experiences, take in the wisdom they have to offer, and apply those lessons to your own path. This approach has served me well throughout my career. Over the years, I’ve learned that everyone is not meant to be part of my journey, and that’s okay. When I connect with people who genuinely align with me, my vision, and my artistry, something special happens. When the right people come together, aligned in purpose and creativity, magic is made.
