Today we’d like to introduce you to Tate Hoffmaster.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve wanted to be an artist for a long time. Often distracted, often troublesome. It was a long road but for someone without much focus I had extreme focus on my goals which was mainly to become a filmmaker and musician. I went to film school and worked for some companies and eventually made my first feature independently.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, funding is the main thing against an artist, so you get smart and work with what you have. Eventually I read Rebel without a Crew by Robert Rodriguez and that helped.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m mainly a filmmaker. I’m also a musician, painter, author and photographer. I’m very proud of my sophmore feature Pizza Guy 8. I say what sets me apart is I typically do very weird work, which I’m glad to say is on the rise.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I hope to see streaming pop. Theaters are half the experience. I unfortunately see film becoming very monopolized and probably even more isolated, unlike the communal experience I grew up with loving.
