Today we’d like to introduce you to Keri Trbovich.
Hi Keri, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my baking business in 2020, during the pandemic. Shortly after the pandemic began, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Because I no longer felt comfortable going into people’s homes for my homecare job and potentially exposing her to further complications, I turned to baking as a creative outlet and a new way to earn income.
In 2022, I officially became licensed through the state while also starting a new career as a school-based occupational therapist. From 2022 through 2026, I continued making custom cakes on the side, building my skills, creativity, and following.
Then, in the summer of 2026, I decided to take my business in a new direction. I realized that while I love the creativity and decorating that comes with cake design, I don’t actually enjoy the baking part! That led me to start creating faux cakes and faux dessert art, allowing me to focus on the part I love most: designing and creating unique, whimsical pieces. I recently opened an Etsy shop, where I sell my faux cake art, handmade magnets, wedding cake card boxes, and other vintage-inspired creations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all! Balancing my business with my family life and career has been challenging and has led to burnout at times. I’ve also dealt with the ups and downs of social media, including constantly posting, changing algorithms, and the occasional troll. Learning to take breaks, stay consistent, and not take everything personally has been a big part of the journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known in the real cake world for my vintage-style cakes and detailed buttercream flower work. Now, I’m bringing that same creativity into faux cake art, along with handmade magnets, wedding cake card boxes, and other whimsical pieces.
I’m most proud of how I’ve been able to evolve my business while staying true to what I love most: decorating and creating. What sets me apart is that I’m able to take the techniques and aesthetic I developed through years of making real cakes and turn them into unique pieces of art that can be enjoyed long after the cake is gone.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think genuine connection is the best way to network. Social media has helped me connect with other creators and learn from people I admire. I also believe strongly in supporting other women instead of comparing ourselves to one another. There’s room for everyone to succeed, and genuinely cheering each other on can lead to great relationships and opportunities.
