Conversations with Jessica Hawthorne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Hawthorne.

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been an entrepreneur-spirited artist. My mother established Main Line Therapeutic when life forced her to re-invent herself. I worked here alongside her in the beginning, and then took a detour when I got married and became a mom. When my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2021, the path of my life then began to recalibrate. She went into brain surgery on my birthday, and then died exactly 3 months later on her birthday. I always knew I would take over this business; I just didn’t expect it to happen like that. My mother created the vision of Main Line Therapeutic when massage therapy was still not a recognized profession. She was a catalyst in this neighborhood and ahead of her time with her ideas and aspirations. She was an artist, an empath, a natural healer, and a pioneer in the holistic industry. Her unwavering positive energy inspired other creative women to pursue their dreams and, therefore, brought more eclectic businesses to Haverford Township over the last several decades. Main Line Therapeutic was a collective before that became a trendy thing to be. I was honored to be passed the torch upon her death, and have recently resigned from my teaching career to wholeheartedly focus all my energy on this practice and it’s untapped potential. I am so excited to be 100% present here and breathe life into my creative endeavors that have been waiting for me on the back burner for way too long.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Managing the significant grief of my mother’s loss as I was handed the reins here, while parenting my 2 children on my own, supporting them through their grief, and continuing to show up to teach my art class at the middle school, still very deep in the aftermath of COVID-19, all at the same time, was definitely a time of intense struggle. Autopilot is the best way to describe where I was at. I wanted to be here at Main Line Therapeutic, but I was also not ready to leave a job I fought really hard for. I knew I was going to do it, I just needed to feel ready. I knew I would know when the time was right. It’s also difficult as an artist to completely trust that your craft will be able to provide for you and those you are responsible for. It takes a lot of courage as a creative to follow your dreams instead of falling in line with societal norms and pressure.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts & Art History and a Master’s degree in Instruction & Curriculum (the art of communicating information). I am a visual artist, a writer, a dancer, a thinker. I have been a licensed & practicing massage therapist for 25 years with knowledge and experience in various modalities, as well as a certified Art Therapy Practitioner.

What I do here that is special is offer a 90-minute session of a gentle, therapeutic massage integrated with Reiki, Thai/yoga technique, hot stones, and lymphatic system stimulation. I also use healing sound frequencies and aromatherapy. I intuitively adapt to the needs of my individual clients and offer suggestions for their self-healing journey when they leave. I call this session a ‘Nervous System Reset.’ Other practitioners may attempt to copy this offering, but it makes a difference if the practitioner themselves has done the work on their own journey of healing.

I am also currently offering Art Therapy sessions for school-aged youth, with a speciality in adolescents as I taught Art to that age group for over 10 years. These sessions are focused on creative projects and expression, but can also include various healing practices and modalities in an effort to reduce cortisol levels, and therefore make faster progress with fluidity and ease.

How do you think about luck?
I consider myself a blessed and fortunate person. I’m not so sure that I believe in ‘luck.’ I think the idea of ‘luck’ is preparation meeting opportunity. I believe in divine timing and positive energy. If your heart is always in the right place and you consistently put good vibes out into the world, things have a way of falling into place.
