Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Shaffer.
Hi Jason, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the Lancaster County Area and at an early age became obssed with music.
I played trumpet in grade school but when the 90s rock wave hit all I wanted was a guitar and begged and begged my parents until I finally got my first guitar.
I played in garage bands as you do in middle school but as I got into high school I wanted to take music more seriously and started thinking about career possibilities.
I had a music teacher in high school recommend I get into the behind the scenes aspect of music and production.
He suggested that I look into a Recording Technology school in Florida called Full Sail.
I graduated high school and then the following year I was enrolled to go to Full Sail.
After college I took the path of working at other studios as an assistant or house engineer before opening up my own studio in 2012
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Getting into any creative filed is going to have some struggles or a bumpy road, it’s some times hard to break into a field like this, it takes time but if you stay persistent and put out good work you will eventually build up a busy roster of work. A lot of times I get the comment from people that they can’t believe I have a full time recording studio in mechanicsburg and that there is enough music and artists to make that happen.
I think this area of Harrisburg has a very thriving music scene and tons of talent There is a lot of very cool things going on around here.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am very versatile in the studio as far as who I work with and styles of music.
I’d say what I really love is working with bands or singer/songwriter artists.
I really enjoy taking a raw idea or seed of an idea and bringing it to life. Exploring the ideas and feeling what resonates with everyone in the room together.
With AI being used more and now people are creating music strictly to try to hit an algorithm I have taken more the approach that I want things to be real and have integrity. I want the decisions being made to be purposeful and supporting the song and vision at hand.
that being said I can break out all the bells and whistles of modern productions if that’s what the project and clients are asking for but in other projects we keep it as human and as real as possible. It’s all about what’s serves the music the best at the end of the day.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I moved into this area about 2004 and have loved it from the start. I think there is so much to do here and options for everyone. I like that within a 15-20 car ride you can be in the city for a nice dinner along the river and then go see a band or if you go the other direction you can be in the woods hiking.
as I mentioned before I think there is a really great music scene and musical community.
