Conversations with Aurora Teasley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aurora Teasley.

Hi Aurora, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Zenn Hair Care was born in 2020, shortly after I graduated from college, during a time when I was struggling to find employment. Rather than allowing that challenge to define my next chapter, I decided to create an opportunity for myself by turning my passion for hair care into a business. I launched Zenn Hair Care online, and within minutes of launching, my products sold out. That moment gave me the confidence and motivation to pursue entrepreneurship full-time and build something of my own.

As the business grew, I expanded beyond e-commerce and ventured into in-person retail. I began with a three-month contact at a smaller mall, which opened the door to a much bigger mall. This opened the door to a much bigger opportunity; securing a retail cart at the fourth largest mall in the United States. I remained there for nearly two years, gaining valuable experience in retail, connecting with customers and introducing my brand to a broader audience. However, as operational costs continued to rise, I made the strategic decision to close my retail cart to return to selling online.

Leaving the mall was a turning point. Although I initially wondered whether this chapter of my business had come to an end, I soon realized it was only the beginning of something new. I was accepted into the spring cohort of Goldman Sach’s One Million Black Women program, an experience that transformed the way I viewed my business and its future. It challenged me to think beyond simply selling products and to focus on building a sustainable, competitive brand with long-term growth potential.

Today, I am taking a more intentional approach to rebuilding a growing Zenn Hair Care. I have decided to bootstrap the next phase of my business, investing in the reformulation of my hair care products to strengthen their quality, competitiveness and market appeal. My goal is to position Zenn Hair Care for future growth, build a strong foundation and eventually pursue investment opportunities that will help me scale.

My journey has taught me that setbacks do not have to signal the end of a dream. Sometimes, they create the space needed to grow, rethink your strategy and build something even better. Zenn Hair Care began as an opportunity I created for myself and I am committed to continuing that journey with a clearer vision, a stronger foundation and a renewed belief in what my business can become.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, the journey has not been a smooth road. One my biggest challenges was managing the high operational cost of running a retail cart at a major mall, which ultimately led me to return to selling online. I’ve also had to navigate the challenges of growing a business with limited resources while competing in a crowded hair care market. At times, I questioned what was next for my company, but these experiences taught me resilience and the importance of adapting. Through Goldman Sach’s One Million Black Women program, I gained a new perspective on entrepreneurship and learned to focus on building a stronger foundation for long-term growth.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Zenn Hair Care is an organic scalp and hair care brand specializing in simple, nourishing ingredients that support healthy hair from root to tip. We are best known for our air growth pomade, formulated with black castor oil, shea butter and organic beeswax, which has helped customer addressed concern with thinning edges.

One products I am especially product of is our apple cider vinegar scalp cleanser. As someone who personally struggled with dandruff, creating a product that soothes and cleanses my scalp while delivering results for customers is incredibly meaningful to me. Hearing from customers with different hair textures who experience a clearer scalp and moisturized hair reminds me why I started this business and motivates me to continue creating products that make a difference.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe luck has played a role in my life or business; I believe in God’s will. Every opportunity, challenge and milestone in my journey has happened for a reason and I believe God has guided me through each season. Even the setbacks have helped shape me into the entrepreneur I am today. I trust that His timing and plan for my life and Zenn Hair Care are greater than my own.
