Today we’d like to introduce you to Ash Zimmerman.
Hi Ash, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi there! My name is Ash. I’m a 25-year-old entrepreneur based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but my journey to business ownership began from a place of deep stillness. After being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and several co-morbidities, I found myself navigating palliative care and a grueling schedule of specialists that left me largely bedridden.
During my years of working from home as a medical coder, I turned to plants as a way to invite the outside world in. What began as a few pots grew into a home jungle—a sanctuary where I could reconnect with nature’s rhythms without the physical toll of the outdoors. Through the gentle work of caring for greenery, meditation with crystals, and the wisdom of tarot, my world began to expand. I realized that even in a body that felt limited, my spirit was ready to grow. In August 2025, I opened The Plant Witch in Downtown Harrisburg to share that magic with others, advocating for a lifestyle rooted in intentionality, self-care, and a deep reverence for the Earth.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road; in fact, some days the road felt physically impossible. As a dynamically disabled business owner, my ‘good days’ and ‘bad days’ can look vastly different. This past winter was a particular test of my resolve. Despite dealing with degenerative joint disease in my spine, chronic migraines, and pelvic floor issues, I was walking 20 minutes to and from the shop every single day in the cold.
There were mornings when the pain was so loud I could barely move, let alone imagine standing behind a counter for eight hours. But that’s where the ‘magic’ comes in. Every time I felt like I couldn’t take another step, I reminded myself that I wasn’t just walking to a job—I was walking toward a sanctuary I built. Knowing I would spend my day surrounded by the life-force of plants and the grounding energy of crystals. My shop didn’t just need me; I needed it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Plant Witch?
The Plant Witch is more than just a boutique; it is a houseplant and metaphysical sanctuary designed to help people create their own intentional spaces. We specialize in the intersection of nature and spirit, offering a curated selection of lush indoor plants, ethically sourced crystal towers, and tarot decks. But beyond the mystical, we are deeply rooted in practical sustainability. You’ll find eco-friendly lifestyle goods like bamboo household tools, wool dryer balls, and clean beauty products—items that help you care for the Earth as much as you care for yourself.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to a human-centric, slow-living philosophy. In a world that demands high-volume and high-speed, we advocate for the opposite. I am most proud of the community we’ve built in Downtown Harrisburg—a space where people feel safe to explore their intuition, whether that’s through a tarot reading, a propagation workshop, or simply finding the right crystal to ground their energy. I want readers to know that when they walk through our doors, they aren’t just shopping; they are reclaiming a bit of magic and peace for their own daily lives. We are here to help you slow down and cultivate a home that feels like a sanctuary.
How do you think about luck?
Every hardship I’ve faced has been a lesson that I’ve folded into my personal wisdom. I didn’t get to where I am today through luck alone; I got here through the disciplined practice of positive self-talk, breathwork, and manifestation. When I was bedridden, those were the only tools I had. I had to breathe my way through the pain and visualize the life I wanted before I could physically build it. Manifestation, for me, isn’t about wishing for things to happen—it’s about preparing your spirit to receive the opportunities you’re working for. My business is the physical manifestation of that internal work. I’ve taken the ‘ash’ of my past and used it to grow something vibrant and alive.
I’ve learned that life isn’t just what happens to you—it’s how you metabolize those experiences. I like to think of myself as a Phoenix rising from the ashes; and yes, the irony of my name being Ash isn’t lost on me.
