Check Out Nomi Foxxx’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nomi Foxxx.

Hi Nomi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I discovered burlesque around 2018–2019 on YouTube lol, and I came across the amazing Raquel Reed and Mika Romantic. When I first saw Raquel Reed in her green award-winning costume and act, I remember being completely captivated by how incredible she looked. I also remember immediately thinking, ‘Well, I could never do that. I don’t have the body for it.’

Then I came across Mika Romantic’s “Is It a Crime?” act the famous black-and-yellow costume and my mind was completely blown. I remember saying to myself, ‘OMG… what is this? And how do I become it?!’

But my first real experience with dance started much earlier, when I was around 7 or 8 years old. I took ballet and tap, and I loved it so much. Unfortunately, I only did it for about a year, and I’m assuming it was because of money that I couldn’t continue. It’s honestly one of the things I wish had gone further for me, because I truly loved technical dance.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest struggles has been learning to truly believe in myself and finding the confidence to step onto that stage, even on the days when I don’t feel like I look my best or when I’m being overly critical of my body. It’s about reminding myself of that confidence, pushing past those insecurities.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Creating and founding the Miss Ebony Burlesque Universe Pageant!

I’m still amazed that I created something so special and trailblazing for Black burlesque beauties in this wild, beautiful burlesque community. The pageant is truly a space to come as you are in all of your Blackness. I wanted it to feel like a big, glamorous family reunion where we just so happen to be competing for a title lol and it’s something I am incredibly proud of.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Dear, I fear we’re facing a problem of possibly being wiped out again because of this current administration wanting to put a stop to the expression of the art of burlesque and just free speech. BUT I also truly believe burlesque will stand the test of time and remain an unforgettable art form that will always and forever be desired for the ages, no matter who’s in “power.”

And I also do appreciate the art form hitting main stages, even though true showgirls aren’t getting the attention or recognition we deserve. Check out Aquarius Moon’s Everybody Wants to Be a Showgirl. She truly hones in on what a true showgirl is with her exhibit
