Today we’d like to introduce you to Dakota Johnson.
Hi Dakota, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a young girl, I always just knew I wanted to be a photographer. At the age of 12, I received my very first set of camera gear for Christmas and ever since that day, the motivation and passion for photography, only grew stronger. I would make all my friends and family members go out around town with me, practicing my composition and perfecting my craft. Or I would even just go out as the seasons changed to photograph the landscapes and scenery just to have my hands on the camera, perfecting my craft one step and a time. Which has lead me to present day, where I own my very own wedding photography business and still am fully in love with what I do!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have been very blessed with this journey of mine. Since the very beginning, the growth and creativity I experience every year has exponentially increased. Like most creatives though, burnout and imposter syndrome always creep in every once in a while. These have taught me though that social media is only a highlight reel and sometimes doesn’t show the full story of what an image holds. And even through those tough times, I am still beyond sure that I am following the right path and creating a life for myself that is worth more than any other job could fulfill me with!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in portrait photography of all kinds ~ but have found myself in the wedding, couples, and family photography industry where I am known the most! I am most proud of starting my business at such a young age.
As a young girl, I always envisioned my path following a traditional route. High School. College. Work. But as I graduated high school during the pandemic, my view on this route changed dramatically. I stuck with my business and hit the ground running in all the time spent at home. Making Instagram reels, marketing, and branding, and taking my business to the next level which has certainly played a huge roll in who and where I am today. A young, post grad girl who also trades her weekends and evenings to growing her business and making something for herself that no one can take away or waiver within herself, is my biggest accomplishment to this day.
I would say my love for the art of photography and bringing creativity to every shoot is what sets me apart. I absolutely love having couples who let my brain work a million miles a minute during each session and getting creative with me to try new poses and bring a new look to what it means to photograph weddings and portraits!
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is when I would spend every day after school, coming home to my markers, colored pencils, and printer paper where I would create storybooks and give them to my friends and family. As I mentioned before, I am a full creative at heart. My mind always was thinking of the next story or idea to share with others and every day after school, I would come home to make that happen. I loved spending that time alone, just drawing, painting, and coloring everything I could think of. I don’t know where my life would be without creativity and art! Still to this day, I am known amongst everyone who knows me as the “crafty sister” and am often called to help with all kinds of DIY projects and art pieces!
