Hi Lori, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We got into the business by accident. In August 2021, our family purchased a yard card sign rental to commemorate our parents’ 60th wedding anniversary. The owners were discontinuing the business because of a divorce, and I inquired about taking it over. We purchased some inventory and became the official affiliate for Yard Card Queen that covers the South Hills suburbs of Pittsburgh.
Along with my husband, I am approaching the five-year anniversary of owning the business, and we have grown our sales numbers every year. We do signs for birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, retirements and new baby announcements, plus other special occasions. We also are involved with charities in the area and have done courtesy signs for children coming out of extended hospital stays.
I find the business to be rewarding because it brings happiness to people’s lives, and we feel like that is in short supply these days, particularly when we started in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. We get personal satisfaction out of enriching the lives of others and bringing a little joy to our customers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been relatively smooth for us. We continue to invest in the business, growing our inventory to meet the needs of our customers. We feel we provide personalized service that other yard sign businesses are unable to match.
Sales have increased each year, and it provides a chance for me and my husband to spend time together doing the setups.
