Community Highlights: Meet Randall Jones of Ursus Operations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randall Jones.

Hi Randall, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in technology, helping large organizations solve major operational and technical problems. That led me into 18 years of public service, where I ultimately ended up as Deputy Head of Contracting Activity for the Drug Enforcement Administration overseeing hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts each year.

I left Federal service and decided to build something of my own that could bring that experience and value back to my local community. So in 2025, I founded Ursus Operations to help regular people and small businesses use technology in the way that makes sense for them.

Ursus Operations provides in home technology support to residents in the North Huntingdon area. We also provide direct support and advisory services to organizations in the area that need help with difficult technology problems.

What drives me is not the technology itself, but rather helping the local community and seeing people gain confidence with technology. Seeing that positive impact is the real reward.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. But it has been a rewarding one.

Starting your own business requires you to function in a lot of different roles. I have had to brush up on things like sales, marketing, finance, etc. very quickly.

It also requires patience and a belief that your mission is worthwhile. A lot of early investments in your business start to compound later on. About a year in, I am starting to see some of the good work we did early on start to really make an impact.

I think some of the best roads aren’t very smooth at all.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Ursus Operations?
Ursus Operations exists to help make technology work for you, not the other way around.

One of our primary services is in home technology support for residents throughout the North Huntingdon area. We do computer repair, new device setup, WiFi/printer issues, data recovery, and more. We also teach technology classes in the local area.

We also support local businesses in our area with practical technology strategy and guidance.

We particularly enjoy helping with complex technical problems where things get tough. Call us when you’re stuck.

What makes us proud is the trust we have built with our clients. We want every client to feel more confident about their technology after we leave than they did before.

What were you like growing up?
I was curious and liked to read up on a lot of different topics. I liked to come up with ideas that included everyone and made our lives better.

A lot of what I do with Ursus Operations is the natural extension of this.
