Check Out Talon Barnett’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Talon Barnett.

Hi Talon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Modern Era Grooming was born long before there was ever a shop with its name on the door.

My journey into barbering began during some of the lowest moments of my life. I was young, lost, and without direction—repeating cycles that seemed to lead nowhere but further down. After a difficult childhood, trauma, addiction, and being on my own since I was 16 or 17, much of my life had been about survival. I lacked passion and purpose. I felt small, overlooked, and misunderstood, and for a long time I was simply trying to keep a roof over my head.

Then I found barbering.

I landed an apprenticeship under Sal Giannone, and for the first time, I felt a spark of passion that eventually became purpose. I found guidance from someone who understood what it meant to have a rough start in life. More importantly, I began to see what was possible. I saw how a barbershop could bring a community together and how this craft could become an outlet for creativity, emotion, mentorship, and service.

I remember standing in the shop day after day, watching everyone cut while working three other jobs just to keep a roof over my head. I wanted my own chair more than anything. I wanted the opportunity to cut hair, build relationships, and perfect my craft every single day.

When I finally earned that opportunity, being the new barber wasn’t easy. I fought tooth and nail for anyone willing to give me a chance. I can still remember hearing clients say, “Anyone but him.”

Instead of allowing those words to defeat me, I used them as fuel.

Just three months after I began cutting in the shop, I entered a student barber competition at a Philadelphia trade show—and came home with a trophy.

Something changed in me that day.

I went from simply wanting somebody to let me cut their hair to realizing that I wanted to be somebody in this industry.

From there, I competed anywhere and everywhere I could, traveling across the country and sacrificing time and money to build my name and test myself against some of the best. At the same time, I continued servicing my clients full-time, organizing community givebacks, and constantly studying and refining my craft. Barbering taught me that no matter how accomplished you become, you are never finished learning.

Over the years, I became a multi-award-winning barber and built the name Talon Sharp, but some of my greatest lessons never came with trophies.

I learned consistency—how to show up even when the results aren’t visible yet.

I learned integrity—choosing to do right by people and holding myself accountable when I fall short.

I learned responsibility—especially after entering shop ownership and realizing that other people and their families rely on the environment you help provide.

Most importantly, I learned what it truly means to refuse to quit.

Through some incredibly dark personal battles, I had to learn how to keep moving forward and begin creating the world I wished existed.

That is where Modern Era Grooming truly comes from.

During one of the darkest periods of my life, I spent some of the last money I had getting a logo custom-made for a business that didn’t even exist yet.

For years, I stared at that logo.

I put it on hats. I put it on flyers for community givebacks. Modern Era Grooming was something before it ever physically became something.

It was manifestation at its finest.

Even the logo tells our story. The white Modern Era lettering illuminates against the darkness of the black circle, representing light at the end of a dark tunnel. The name itself represents the foundation and traditions of old-school barbering meeting the creativity and evolution of the modern era.

Eventually, I came to a realization:

There is no perfect time to start. The time is now. Every day you wait is another day your vision doesn’t exist—and you never know whose life could be impacted by bringing that vision to life, including your own.

Modern Era Grooming finally became real.

But I would never claim that I built it alone.

My partner, Tim Ingram, and his supportive friends and family played an instrumental role in making this possible. My wife and daughter have supported my vision and believed in a successful outcome even during moments when I doubted myself. Our friends and families have stood behind us, and most importantly, our clients have been warmly embraced into what we call the Modern Era family.

Because that is what we are—a family, a community, and a team.

Modern Era was designed to feel different from the moment you walk through the door. Our black-and-white aesthetic isn’t simply about appearance. It creates a clean, luxurious, modern canvas where the client becomes the artwork and the talent of our barbers is what brings the color.

We pride ourselves on providing some of the highest-quality grooming services around, with no detail overlooked. We serve all ages and hair textures, from timeless traditional cuts to the latest modern styles. Our work extends into intricate freestyle designs, Philadelphia sports logos, characters, color, perms, beard and facial services, and traditional hot-towel shaves.

But a great barbershop should offer more than a great haircut.

We keep snacks and drinks available for our clients for a simple reason: if you walked into my home, one of the first things I would do is offer you something to eat or drink. We want Modern Era to carry that same feeling of hospitality.

The conversations, friendships, laughter, and camaraderie matter just as much as what happens behind the chair. Our goal is for you to walk out looking your best, feeling even better, and already looking forward to coming back.

Only about a year into opening, Modern Era Grooming was honored with local recognition for men’s grooming—an accomplishment I never imagined we would achieve so quickly.

But winning something isn’t where the work ends.

Winning is an honor. Defending what you’ve built is the challenge we warmly embrace.

Recognition isn’t simply a title to us; it is fuel for whatever comes next. What separates our vision is that we don’t believe success should stop with us. When we win, we want others to win too. We want our growth to create opportunities, strengthen our community, support those who need it, and inspire others to believe that where they begin does not have to determine where they finish.

Looking toward the future, we hope to expand Modern Era Grooming and bring our vision to a larger audience—but never at the expense of our quality or the values that got us here.

We want to continue giving back. We want to become a staple of our community. We want to positively impact more lives, create meaningful connections, and have some fun with our clients along the way.

Modern Era Grooming is more than a place to get a haircut.

It is a testament to hard work, dedication, community, unity, and the refusal to quit when life gets difficult. It is proof that something envisioned during your darkest moments can one day become a light for others.

It takes a village to create the world you wish existed.

We’re building ours—one person, one haircut, and one connection at a time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Many of the greatest challenges have come from learning how to build something while still growing as a person and a leader myself. I started with very little—working multiple jobs just to keep a roof over my head, fighting for opportunities behind the chair, and learning to turn rejection into motivation.

Along the way, I’ve faced financial struggles, personal loss, self-doubt, depression, addiction, and moments when giving up felt easier than continuing. Building a business brought new challenges: learning leadership, carrying the responsibility of creating a place where others can build their own careers, and understanding that success requires showing up consistently—even when progress feels invisible.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that there will never be a perfect time, perfect circumstances, or a completely clear road ahead. Sometimes you have to believe in a vision before there is any proof it will work.

Every obstacle has taught me something about resilience, accountability, integrity, and perseverance. The difficult parts of my journey didn’t just challenge me—they helped shape the values Modern Era Grooming stands for today. We don’t expect the road to always be easy. We simply refuse to stop moving forward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a 21-time award-winning barber, entrepreneur, and artist behind the chair. What began as simply learning how to cut hair became an obsession with mastering my craft and discovering just how far creativity in barbering could go.

My work ranges from precision fades and traditional barbering to modern styles, shear work, beard sculpting, color, and detailed hair art. I’m especially known for creative designs—from Philadelphia sports logos and portraits to characters and intricate freestyle pieces—using hair as a canvas and clippers as my tool.

Throughout my career, I’ve traveled across the country competing against talented barbers, continuously putting my skills to the test and earning 23 awards along the way. Competition taught me that being talented is only part of becoming great. You have to remain a student of your craft. Trends change, techniques evolve, and there is always another level to reach.

What I’m most proud of, however, isn’t a trophy or title. It’s building a career where my creativity can impact people. A haircut can seem like a small thing, but I’ve seen firsthand how changing the way someone looks can change the way they carry themselves. There is something powerful about watching someone look in the mirror, smile, and leave your chair with more confidence than when they sat down.

What sets me apart is that I’ve never wanted to be limited to one style, one type of client, or one definition of what a barber can be. Whether I’m creating an award-winning competition piece, giving someone the cleanest haircut they’ve ever had, or mentoring and inspiring others through the industry, I approach it with the same mentality: never stop learning, never skip the details, and never become so successful that you forget the people your craft gives you the opportunity to impact.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was creative, curious, and always a little different. I had a big imagination and was drawn to anything that gave me an opportunity to express myself. I don’t think I knew exactly where I fit in yet, but I knew there was more inside of me than I always knew how to communicate.

My childhood wasn’t easy, and because of that I had to become independent at a young age. I often felt misunderstood and overlooked, and some of those experiences made me grow up much faster than I should have had to. At the same time, they shaped some of the qualities that define me today. I became observant, resourceful, resilient, and learned how to read people and connect with those who may feel like they don’t quite fit in either.

I always had a creative side, but growing up I never imagined that creativity would eventually come out through a pair of clippers. Looking back now, though, it makes sense. Barbering brought together so many pieces of who I had always been—creativity, competitiveness, attention to detail, connecting with people, and the desire to make something out of nothing.

I think the kid I was growing up would be amazed to see where life eventually took me. That I escaped becoming the statistic they all thought I would. Some of the things that once made me feel different ultimately became the things that helped me find my own lane.
