Inspiring Conversations with Erin Yapsuga of Level Red Boxing Pittsburgh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Yapsuga.

Hi Erin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I stumbled upon Level Red Boxing Pittsburgh in November 2018, shortly after the grand opening in September 2018. I had recently graduated from Penn State with a degree in kinesiology and was working as a Therapy Aide in a nursing home. Moving back to Pittsburgh, I was eager to try new things and find my niche. My mom was trialing different martial arts studios so I tagged along. Feeling nervous for our first session at Level Red, we dropped by the studio a few days early to ask questions. From the moment we walked through the door, Susie and Anthony, the manager and owner, made us feel like we belonged. They created an environment that made anything feel possible, and put our anxiety at ease. My dad, 4 siblings, and a couple uncles quickly followed suit and our family boxing journey was underway.

From my first class, I was hooked. As an athlete, boxing provided performance goals to work towards. As a kinesiology student, it was a space to expand my understanding of biomechanics. As a fitness advocate, my body was challenged in ways I had never experienced. As an overthinker, hitting the heavy bag was an outlet for cathartic release. As a person seeking connection, Level Red was a community ready with open arms.

About a year into being a member, my dad took it upon himself to ask Susie what she thought about me working at the gym. The answer wasn’t a flat out no, but it definitely wasn’t anytime soon. I was shy and needed more boxing experience. Mortified, I thought I’d never go back.

Fast forward a couple years, a few different jobs, and the acquisition of my Personal Training Certification, I formally applied to be a coach at Level Red. I did not get the position, but was offered a job at the Front Desk, which was the best redirection of my life. I became invested in each person. I got to know the members, their interests and goals, who liked to wake up early. I spent a lot of time with the other employees and coaches. I was learning from the people I admired and creating genuine friendships. They helped me find my voice. When I was finally given the opportunity to coach a class, I was confident and ready. Little did I know, coaching would only be the start.

In February 2026, I took over as owner of Level Red Boxing Pittsburgh. Having grown with the community from the beginning, this has been the greatest honor of my life. I’m so grateful to be surrounded daily by people who lift each other up, encourage others to achieve their best, and celebrate people for who they are. We are Stronger Together!

When I started boxing 8 years ago, I could have never imagined my dream of owning a gym would come to life. I firmly believe if you consistently show up for yourself and others, put effort into your passions, and lead your life with kindness and an openness to learn, good things will come. But- there’s no version of this story that exists without the love and relentless support of the Level Red Boxing Pittsburgh community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has included challenges. As a first time business owner, my biggest struggle has been confronting the core beliefs I have about myself. This process has required a great deal of learning about experiencing both the good and the bad. Instead of trying to shut out fear and shame, I’m learning to accept it and use it as an opportunity to push past discomfort and grow. Instead of perseverating on a thought or decision, I’m learning how to seek help from my support system and ask questions when I don’t know. Life is always changing and throwing obstacles at us, what I’ve learned is to adapt and move with it.

We’ve been impressed with Level Red Boxing Pittsburgh, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Level Red Boxing Pittsburgh is a boxing inspired fitness studio that incorporates heavy bags, mitt work, and kettlebell strength training into our classes. Boxing is both physically and mentally challenging but very beneficial. It enhances your cardiovascular health, improves balance and coordination, strengthens muscles and joints, reduces stress, and improves attention and focus. The workout is unmatched. Every coach is dedicated to motivating you and pushing you to new heights. They have their own style that keeps you on your toes and makes each class feel like a unique challenge.

Most people who walk through our door are starting their fitness journey or searching for a new hobby. Boxing can be an intimidating sport, but our community is committed to making everyone feel seen, accepted, and welcome. We’ve created something that’s bigger than fitness or a physical location. It’s the pride you feel when a room full of your peers cheer for your accomplishments. It is the confidence you built on the heavy bag but carry outside of the gym. It’s in the familiar faces you see around the city. It’s the buzz of conversation after class. It’s the people that make working out fun and getting out of bed in the morning easy. This is a space where our differences are celebrated, strangers become family, and we truly feel like we belong. Whether you’re a beginner or expert, we strive to meet you where you’re at. At Level Red Boxing Pittsburgh, we’re Strong At Every Level.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think the most important thing to do is persistently show up. You don’t have to be the most talented to commit to something you’re passionate about. People notice your time and effort and most often want to put that energy back into you. Be genuine. Ask questions. You never know who can have the greatest impact on you when you’re open to it. I think the second most important thing is to be patient. You’re not always going to start where you want but don’t rush the process. There’s so much learning that can happen from the ground up.
