Meet Nate Mass of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Mass.

Hi Nate, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Play Tennis started as a way to satisfy a tennis addiction. During COVID I developed an insatiable appetite to play more tennis that couldn’t be satisfied with tennis group chats, leagues, or clubs. I thought to myself: “should planning tennis really be this painful?”

What started as an app to help connect players and courts on a few LA courts quickly became a fun way to play tennis and meet new people in the community. In my first couple of weeks on the app I played tennis with an actor, lawyer, crypto trader, and an ex-college athlete. Fast forward a little over a year and Play Tennis is now connecting people in Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, San Francisco, New York, and in over 25 cities across the country helping people make new connections through tennis.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? Certainly not. The original idea and design of the app changed multiple times based on how players were using it. We learned a lot about how players like to coordinate tennis and what they value in an opponent that we didn’t know at the beginning.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been in tech my whole life, so building software to solve a personal problem seemed like the natural thing to do. Early in my career I helped Postmates launch and expand in new markets. This taught me important lessons on scaling local networks, along with a lot of late night burritos.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
